It's easy to bring a bunch of vertical jigs with twister tails and it would be foolish to only bring one, so I'll say something else.
Lipless crankbait, probably firetiger. 1/4 to 1/2oz. They like to get snagged on rocks if you let them sink too far, but boy do they produce.

QueticoMike: "I think you need to make a clarification on soft plastics. If soft plastics count I would want at least 2 ZMAN ShadZ. If they don't count, I would say bullfrog magnum torpedo."i already knew your answer ;) but yes either or, hard or plastic , obviously 1 does not just bring in 1 or 2 plastics.

Two? Two would last me about two hours...if I were lucky. "
Ok I’ll fess up. here are (some) of my Rapalas I bring. I’m a Rapoholic.

Thanks to you, Shock, the F18. I kind of thought it was a joke but tried it one year and caught my largest wilderness walleye on it. Now I take 3 or 4. Fun to try different colors sometimes.

a friend of mine borrowed one of my F-18 white with chartreuse back (which i never used) and he caught some huge smallies on it in the shallows. we've also done good on the rainbow trout pattern ;)

What walllee said. Easy #1 for me.

At least for early (May/June cusp) trips - 1/4 oz chartreuse double-bladed (preferably Indiana blades) spinner bait.

If I took this literally and truly had to choose 1, I would bring a black Jig with white twister tails.
Assuming jigs are a boring answer for this question, I would bring a Rapala original shad in silver.

You should try going bigger with the 3/8oz BooYah chartreuse GLOW blade spinner.

Mike, my mind is sure open, but the size/weight (and blade type) speaks to how, and how fast I tend to fish that lure that time of year. I like to "burn" it just beneath the surface to where the blades leave a bulge in the surface. A heavier lure, or willow leaf blades make me have to retrieve it faster than I'd like to get that effect. Colorado blades make me have to retrieve it slower than I'd like.

zski: "Shad Rap <<< may be replaced by flicker shad...pending further review"
Both great baits, but really quite different despite similar shad profile. Different bouyancy, different materials, one is a loud rattler and one is not. I use both and wouldn’t ever want to choose one or the other!

overthehill: " tail dancer"
I have other cranks in my “deep” box— reef runners, deep husky jerks, bombers— but it’s mostly TDS.
For the TD fans, grab a scatter-rap series with the curved bill if you can. I think the deepest version only trolls to 20 instead of 30 but they can be the ticket when nothing else works for me. Instead of running true they veer like a poorly-tuned crabk, then correct course, then veer again.

carmike:
what style/brand do you use?
Thanks!"
I'm not too picky....Usually whatever I can find on sale. LiveTarget makes really good ones, but they're pretty expensive, so a Rippin' Rap is probably on the end of my line most often. Strike King makes good ones, too. Honestly, I don't think brand matters that much. Just my .02.
Oh, and I assume you were tasking about the lipless crankbaits. :)

Yes, I was asking about the Rippin Rap.
Haven't used them before, and was going to take a fire tiger and maybe pink uv with me, for my spring trip, and try them out.

3rd. 1/4 oz jig with 4" white twister tail. Removable spinner blade too. I order that stuff in bulk from Northland for river smallmouth fishing. You can get your cost down to about 50 cents a lure.
I was pitching that setup beneath some falls and catching 25-30 inch northern consistently. I removed the blade to let the lure run a little deeper and I limited out in 16-17 inch walleye in about 30 minutes.
About as versatile as it gets.
