Could I used a self issue permit and use my solo canoe to meet up with my crew if I make one of them the trip leader? Can I "swap" permits with someone else if I find someone who would rather enter on my permit date rather than theirs??

As far as canoe in next day, if you had an overnight paddle permit even if another entry point I think that you could join. The fact you'd be hitching a motor ride could be a sticking point but doesn't seem to break the quota principles.

Duh. I will get a separate overnight paddle permit. This would actually be a good idea so I can have the option of going off on my own.
