I have been some reading on getting my Hook 5xDI set up in case the rain ever stops. I have a 10 bank AA holder coming as well as a 4 bank 18650. I cannot find any power draw stats for my Lowarance and they haven't gotten back with me. I am assuming that the 18650's will give longer run time but will it be too many volts? I have zero experience with the 18650's.

Four 18650’s will give you the correct voltage. They are 3.7v each. Wired in series 4x3.7v = 14.8 v . They will give you a lot more run time. Just googled “Hook 5 specs” and found that it draws 1.1 a . That is gonna chew some batteries. My 18650’s are 3400 mah. Or 3.4 amp hours. Which means your Hook 5 would run 3 hours on one 4 pack. My little Garmin Echo draws .120 amps so I get almost 30 hours of run time. I take two packs on a week long trip and have only ever used one.

You electrical......I hate the stuff... I sure wish I could understand it better.....I say this in jist......I can't believe the math involved in say like..
How much electricity would it take to power the Sears tower. Amazing stuff and way out of my realm

I'm going to have to do some more digging. Most trips will be local but my 12V Vexilar battery should work. Lowrance replied back and said input voltage 10.4-17.2 vDC and a power consumption current draw of <12.2W. The Hook was a gift so I can't take it back but if I head where I can't recharge I might just try to pick up a more miserly unit.

Agreed, I worked with propane for years and would much rather work with the risk of a boom vs a buzz.

I’m an electrician. So I enjoy doing the calculations. We rarely use them out in the field. So I enjoy answering these questions. Keeps me using Ohm’s Law wich most electrical calculations are based off of. Lowrance said it uses 12w . That would mean it draws .8 amps. Still pretty hungry. They are nice units. Just not the best for BW tripping. Unless you want to carry a car battery. Electrical work can be dangerous if you don’t know what your doing. You definitely have to be conscious of what your doing at all times. I wish the biggest risk was just a “buzz” . But we face the possibility of arc blasts wich can be catastrophic! That said every job has its risks.

1,1 Amp constant current draw is alot of battery load for the backcountry. 2 to 3 spare 18650 Battery Packs, 18650 smart charger and a 20 or 30W solar panel in the canoe with you charging a pack anytime the sun is out.

I built a 18650 charger in a bottle and a battery, 4 button (protected) 18650's in series into a plastic bottles. Rain proof and they float.
