I'll be taking my first trip to the BWCA in 15ish years in a week and a half and I have to say thanks to everyone for the mountain of information I've been able to glean from trip reports and everything on this website. My brother and I are entering at EP 84 and will do the loop north of Bald Eagle. I haven't settled on where to camp yet though. My first thought was Clearwater Lake, It looks beautiful and less affected by the Pagami fire but I haven't heard anything good about fishing there. Does anyone have information regarding what or how much we might catch? The depth and structure look good, but I've been fooled before. Should we try Pietro instead?
My buddy and I did that loop 3 yrs ago. We stayed on Clearwater. It's an interesting lake as half was burned in the Pagami Creek fire and the other half was untouched. If you like big pike Clearwater and Turtle are your lakes. We caught around 25 over four days and probably lost that many. Only one was under 30 inches. Caught 3 that were 40+. Didn't catch any other species but we were targeting pike. I'd stay on Clearwater and day trip to Turtle. There are 2 camp sites close to each other. The one on the point is the nicer of the two. Pietro was completely burned in the same fire. We just passed through and didn't fish it. It was supposed to have a decent bass population before the fire. One nice thing, that whole area was full of berries! Bald Eagle is your best bet for multiple species. Good luck and enjoy your trip!
Wow it sounds like you had amazing fishing! We love fishing for big pike so we'll try to stay on Clearwater then. Hopefully the blueberries are just as good too. Thank you so much!
