Fellow paddlers, Nordstjernen and Kelso, smashed the fastest known record time this past May. Traveling 220 miles or so, Rainy Lake near International Falls to Grand Portage on Lake superior in 69 hours 25 minutes.

My paddling partner, Kendra, and I watched as they moved non stop knowing that for every hour they didn't sleep we wouldn't be able to in our attempt. For details, read Kelso's trip report. We really, really wished they would have slept! Suffice it to say that we are in awe of what they did and know how difficult it will be to match their effort!

Kendra and I are calling our trip "Just for Fun" as we are answering the challenge issued 51 years ago by Clint Waddell in an article he wrote challenging other canoe racers to try the route. See attached.

Weather permitting, we will launch this Thursday August 15th at 4:00 am. If you're interested, we will be using a Spot for tracking and the map can be accessed at this site:
WaterTribe Tracking Map
You will need to select "MNRR2019" under event, "BeaV" under challenger, and "Show Tracks, OK, Help and Current Waypoints" under display detail from the pull down tabs. Then hit the "regenerate view" button to see us moving along.

Good luck! I appreciated all of your Grand Portage wisdom last year when I asked, and wish you all the best. I'll be entering on Sag on August 17th and will keep an eye out for the canoe with a wake! I suspect you will already be past us by then. :)

From Clint's original Just for Fun article: "Your goal is to reach Grand Portage on Lake Superior, 242 miles away, in 60 hours or less."

I used to think this was a typo... no way can anyone do that! Surely he meant 80 hours or less? But rereading this article, I think Clint wrote exactly what he meant. He believed that the human limit was 60 hours or less, and he wanted to see that limit reached.

I'll bet that BeaV and Kendra have set 60 hours or less as their goal, based on this challenge. If anyone can do it, it's them. Go get 'em!

They are off and moving!!! On a mission that is so meaningful to them that I can't explain it here. When Passion meets (equals) preparation and execution = watch out. Never seen personally a more driven team since my college days in sports. But this doesn't always = success in said goal. Many variables ahead. How they deal with them will determine their outcome. Good start- but many can start good. Will see how they are doing 24+ hours from now.

Last night White Wolf told me: "Southerly winds for most of their challenge. SW tomorrow - maybe slight Gusts in the PM but the further they go E tomorrow the winds should lighten and less chance of precip and coverage though they will likely get wet. Temps tolerable."

For those who would like to compare their progress to ours in May, I'll be periodically updating this map to give a direct comparison.

No Go-Pro - not even their cameras. every ounce counts. Hoping he will use his phone for a couple of "progress" pics. I did photos at the start yesterday afternoon before they went in for supper and sleep.

I noticed that the route they’re taking is not the same as the Voyageurs Challenge. Does anyone know how many miles it saves to cut through Kabetogama and do Dawson’s Road portage? I see they’re on Dawson’s right now. It appears as though they’re making awesome time. Way to go!

They are following the exact same route as Clint Waddell and Verlen Kruger in 1968, and the exact route that Matt and I took in May. The Kruger Challenge route in September is actually 21 miles longer than this route (the Dawson Portage cuts off 12 miles, and the start at Sha-Sha Resort is 9 miles farther east). The route is even longer if Challengers opt to strictly follow the border instead of cutting through the Gold and Grassy Portages.

Looks like there is an ebb and flow with the Norwegian time right now. Maybe nap time for either BeaV or MAKK. Very exciting to follow.

Crooked lake at night...narrows...navigation skills will be at a premium, especially with little rest to this point. BeaV is second to none at navigating with a compass. Hope the moon light is out.

Our plan was that neither of us would sleep at any time. In practice, we occasionally dozed off while paddling, and then woke each other up. I understand that BeaV and Kendra are planning to try taking turns paddling and sleeping in the bow.

I think they may have the bow person resting.... at least for a time. Splits have slowed ( last 4 splits being 2.94kts - 3.5kts - 3.41kts and 3.47 kts - this after most of the day being mid to high 4's and even low 5 ) and it makes some sense due to their location and (I think) being ahead of schedule. It's marathon not a sprint.

Still neck-and-neck on Basswood Lake after 24 hours, after an incredible night with flawless navigation across Crooked Lake. Looks like they holed up for a few minutes on an island for the rainstorm currently passing over them. The big question: How much do they have left in them for Day 2? This is where Matt and I started to slow down, and it's their chance to gain a significant lead.

Yeah. They are getting it pretty good now. Hard to say - and IAM not at work to check- but probably some LTG , though probably not cloud to ground. I told them highest chances of precip between 6pm Thursday and 3 pm Fri. So this is about in the middle of that window. Should only last another HR or 2 , even though they are moving with it. Good news for them is that after this it should be the last significant weather of the attempt.

Peter - Thank you for providing and keeping this link updated. It is exciting to watch. I can't believe how similar the times are so far. I don't think I am going to get much done today at work...lol

Looks like ideal conditions today! Mid-60s to low 70s, partly cloudy with a slight tailwind. They have slipped a little behind our time on knife (only a couple miles) , but this is where they can really put the pedal down and get past us with some daylight on the granite chain! They should pick up a few hours on us there.
Tommorow looks like it will be a little rough with the temps getting towards the 80s and no clouds. No headwind tho. We fought a headwind on our third day, so as long as they get some good miles in today, tommorow they will just have to hang in there steadily and sweat it out.

They have closed the gap to a quarter mile now. We took a short break on an island before tackling sag.
If they don't do the same I suspect they will pass us for good now. They are on pace for a good amount of daylight on the granite chain.

I think Selfsuffi summed up most everyone's feelings on this subject. Glad the Norwegians took it upon themselves to test their skill and endurance to achieve the unthinkable. Supper happy for them (and impressed). Also rooting really hard for my friends to do the same!

Matt and Kelso's sportsmanship certainly adds to this torn feeling. Kinda wish they were jerks.. :) but they are not.

They've successfully reached the Granite Chain well before dark, a crucial part of their plan which will allow them to gain a solid lead. In the dark and fog, Matt and I were crawling along. Go Kendra Go BeaV!!!!

Good stuff here. Matt and Peter are class acts. After finishing last year in 98 hours (longer course) they both came out to welcome us as we finished (BeaV's group) the next day. (a full day behind).

The Granite River going the direction this challenge dictates is imo- the toughest part of the challenge. I can't imagine doing it in the dark. A few choice words has usually been mentioned about it from team mates as we enter into Magnetic.

I am anxious for tomorrow and Sunday's conversations when I met them at Grand Portage. I have a list of question, just hope they get some rest and are prepared to share. Their trip report should be really interesting. It is like waiting for the release of a new best seller only this is a true story.
As for the Peter/ Matt - BeaV/Kendra discussion. All 4 have been great sports at every turn! - cheering for each other. A fine group of athletes! They are humble, hard working, kind and actually hope the best for their fellow paddlers. Good sportsmanship personified. I am proud to call them all "friend".

EDIT- looks like bow person is resting/sleeping on South Lake. Probably more like after 3-4pm.

They have once again picked up to a pace of what is expected ( for them) at this juncture. Even though it's certainly very difficult to do. ( even for them to pick it back up after said "rest" if that is the case) It's almost like at South Lake and Wednesday Bay of Crooked that they were extremely confident that even by resting (if that's the case) they would make their goal. Almost like it was planned? Prior extreme training and preparation is obvious at these locations of "rest". It's not like they don't know where they are at compared to time taken / effort given and effort / time needed to finish with their goal time. It's extreme high mileage canoeing/portaging calculated right down to the brass tacks. Did those reading expect anything else?

I would have to believe there will be quite a gathering waiting for them at the finish line. I'm hoping that no one decides to do the Grand Portage along side of them. It's going to be good theatre. Please shoot video if you can.

I just got up and checked their progress. Whoa!!! I agree with Kelso, a new record is going to be set unless they take a "quick" break at a portage and pass out for several hours. What an awful thought.
Look on the bright side, both teams will be record holders. One as a coed team, the other not. :)

Phew! Their SPOT is tracking again. Without the SPOT, there'd be no way to verify their times. All this would be a practice run and they'd have to do it all over again. Just kidding. :) I'm amazed how fast they're moving along. They will be done well before bedtime, so we can get to sleep earlier tonight.

It depends. It is mostly downhill or flat for them, with a few climbs. Conditions vary greatly. In the spring it was very muddy and slippery, with 100+ downed trees blocking the trail. By now it should be more dry and the trees should be cleared.

Kendra's husband, one daughter, myself and grandmaL welcomed them at the finish line. Muddyfeet greeted them at old Hwy 61, before the finish.

OMG, amazing! Can't believe I missed watching this progress. We were off grid since the 8th, busy crashing thru the Hairy Lake PMA. We just left the Gunflint Trail this afternoon and if I had known I would have tried to convince my family to go up to Grand Portage. Wow! I am in awe.

I agree with this but know it won't happen. For me, I do very poorly when extremely fatigued and combine that with no sleep would be very dangerous.

I was getting concerned about these two. It doesn't take much to break an ankle or hit your head on a rock up there. I'm so happy all appears well for them.

The trip report from Matt and Peter had me in tears last May, and I have to admit the same in reading this thread. Such an accomplishment! The trip may have only taken 63 hours, but the effort and events leading up to it took much longer. Super glad that everyone is safe and cannot wait for the full trip report!

I echo all the comments people made about good sportsmanship among paddlers. Class acts all the way!

Congrats Kendra and BeaV on an amazing accomplishment. I am in awe of you guys for setting forth to do it and beat the record set this spring. I paid attention to both runs and have nothing but made props for all groups that attempt it. One day I might have to do the full trip not necessarily in a speed version but like paddle the entire distance to gain even more of an appreciation for the feat. I have a ton of questions and peppered Kelso and Nordstjernen a bit as well but I will try and contain myself to just a couple.

How did the two of you become canoeing partners as I would have guessed a husband and wife duo would make sense but you two are not as Kendra's husband met her at the end of the run. Just curious on the story there as you two obviously are an unbelievably talented team and wanted to know how you becoming canoeing partners.

Kendra and BeaV what do you eat while on the trip to keep the endurance and energy high to sustain the entire trip? I remember Kelso and Nordstjernen talking about how the one in the bow was larger in size and built for paddling like crazy but needed a constant supply of calories to keep going. Where the one in the stern was the navigator and required less food? Just curious on you guys as Kendra you look strong but more petite and Beav you look like you are from a western movie and could rope some cattle. Obviously the smaller person in front worked great for you just curious.

Thank you for inspiring a bunch of people and even if you don't get a ton of recognition outside of the BWCA paddling world your accomplishment is right up there with something like Free Solo. Keep living the dream.

There is another un-sung hero in all the border canoe challanges, her name is Lori (Aka Grandma L).
She has devoted personal time and passion for all paddlers to this cause. I visited her for a couple hours before BeaV and Kendra came in. Her tracking abilities are awesome. IMHO, as a firefighter, Lori would have been a great dispatcher.
I would have loved hearing her on the radio, and can see her sitting at a dispatch desk helping out us firefighters.

Wow, thanks for the kind words, especially Lindy, Jeff, Tom, Jim and Miss Molly. Since I am not able to do the BWCA trips of my youth, I find supporting the Challengers is almost as much fun as being out there myself. My spouse refers to us as "the paddle cult". I say, "We are an energetic group of like-minded paddlers seeking adventure and comrades with whom to share these challenges." I have been lucky enough to have had several careers over the last 50 years. My years in a variety of medical settings as a nurse and my experience as a children's camp director, overseeing a resident camps and adventure trips has given me a unique perspective on the Challenge. One of my favorite observations is this. Paddlers, and thus Challengers, are a lot of things - but boring is not one of them! I love them all and am glad for the opportunity to help them succeed.
