I bought this last month and activated it today in prep for this month´s trip.
Pretty cool. You can connect via BT to your phone which makes it MUCH easier to send and receive messages.
It is cheating a bit...I will be able to get weather forecasts to know when to hunker down!
Garmin makes you agree to perpetual billing on your credit card. You can suspend service and avoid the next billing cycle but YOU must remember to do this before the end of the current billing cycle. Not fond of that but there is no other option.

I've been looking at the 66i, and wondering if it would be a reasonable upgrade from my 64st and DeLorme inReach. Something butthead said here a while ago about "all of your eggs in one basket" that holds me back.
Garmin has some nice webinars. Here is one coming up on Thu, Sep 5, 2019 2:30 PM - 3:30 PM CDT "inReach Field Experience Webinar – GPSMAP 66i Navigation and Tracking." Other webinars are archived in youtube videos if you can't participate live.
Also, do you follow the GPS forum here? A wealth of info.

You may wanty to check the available plans a bit more. Monthly Freedom Plan
This is a plan first offered with Delorme Inreach and kept by Garmin when they bought Delorme. Several board members use the Freedom Plan because of the shorter term customer specified plan option, especially compared to Find Me Spot Globalstar plans.

Yeah I just bought an InReach before I knew the 66i existed. The InReach doesn't have the gps power...i.e. it can't hold a lot of routes and waypoints, and doesn't have an SD slot. I assume the 66i is just as good as the 78 or 64 that I'm used to, when it comes to the GPS capabilities.
Wish the 66i used AA batteries instead of the internal lithium.
And yes even though you can subscribe month to month instead of a full year, you must suspend service at the end of the month you paid for, to prevent them from automatically charging you for the next month.
