Looking at this as an entry point in June. Have made multiple trips to the BWCA but trying to keep it simple this year. Goal is to have an easy trip for my dad (71) and to base camp and fish. Is this an entry point that will provide this? The pictographs sound fantastic, and traffic is not a problem for us. Are sites normally full? Will the sites in little bass lake be full? First time considering this entry so my apologies for the questions. Thanks for any help!

This entry point is described in the book 20 Great BWCA Trips. This book describes several beginner friendly trips that would also make them friendly for those with limited desire to portage. It includes day trip options for each trip as well.

The entry point is notable for the pictographs.

My friend went on his first BWCA trip last year with a group of eight in mid September. They base camped on South Hegman for three nights. They had their share of rain. He was in a tent but others were in hammocks.

He caught a large mouth bass on a nightcrawler. I am not sure if leeches were out of stock at the time. Someone in their group caught a 38 inch northern.

My friend liked it so much he wants to go back.

One thing to consider is that there is some portaging involved to get to a camp site. There are some lakes, such as Sawbill (which is supposed to be a good fishing lake) that require no portaging to get to a campsite.

It's difficult to say if the campsites will be full on South Hegman, but the sites on Little Bass will most definitely be open.

Went there last June. From the parking lot to launch is pretty easy-downhill to the lake, uphill to the lot. It can be slippery when wet, but only in a couple of places, and you can go around those. I don't know if your dad is okay mobility-wise, but if I remember correctly, there are a couple of places where you will be going down on just smooth rock. We stayed a camp 1, next to the portage to North Hegman, which is very easy. Almost straight across from the launch. Pretty nice spot, lots of trees for tarp and hammock, on a point so you get good a breeze, and good kitchen area. We didn't check out the other sites, so I can't tell you about them. We were there the 1st week of June, caught smallies from the shore of the camp, but it rained every single day, so we left early, and didn't explore much. Pictos are good, and easy to see. It was the first time for my grandson, and we are going back up this year, and no leaving early !

Thanks for all the replies! My dad is in good shape and doesn’t have issues doing some portaging. We are just trying to do a simple fishing trip. I know there is no way to guarantee open sites, but I don’t want to have to portage to Angleworm. The feedback so far makes me feel like this would be a good choice. Again, thanks for the input!
