I have the Granite Gear Superior One and the Quetico. Both have a pad on the pack for comfort. All well and good...have used them for six or seven trips.

The problem is that I have to ship these things from Texas when I trip. They take up a lot of space...just because of the pad. The pad does not flex in a way for good packing.

I am thinking about getting the GG Traditional #4 which does not have a pad.

Alternatively, I was wondering about modifying my Superior One--remove the pad.

Has anyone done that??

I've done that on daypacks, intending to use the pocket formed with a water bladder/CamelBak. Slip the pad pocket about an inch or 2 from the top, pulled the pad, sealed the cut nylon with a flat tip soldering iron. Then I had a hydration bladder equipped pack, and a foam padded pack, depending on what I use it for.

I talked to the GG people and they discouraged doing it. Anyway, I bought the Traditional which does not have the rigid back frame. It is like the ones the scouts use. It is about half the weight and will ship easily. Prolly still take my quetico for crew gear.
