Here’s another mystery creature for you. I got this a few years ago some 20 miles north of Duluth. The feet look like a snowshoe hare but the ears don’t. What do you think?

Most likely a coyote could be a similar colored furry dog.

given color of the ears and their shape, I would guess a fox

A fox or a collie. Weird to even compare the two, but I see a fox in the ears, but a collie in the coat.

I wish I knew what it was, but sorry I don't. A cat is a possiblity, but never seemed that likely. It's pretty deep woods, a mile and a half to the nearest habitation. All the years I spent snowshoeing, I never saw a single cat track. Lots of bobcats, fox, coyotes, wolves. But then unlikely things do have a way of happening.

Here's another shot from the same setup. So the mystery critter isn't that big.

I thought "cat" right away when I saw it. Looking closer, it was the hind foot and ears that convinced me. Don't know if I'm right, but it is fun to see what everyone else thinks.

I'd bet big that you've got a photo of a Gray Fox.

My guess too is gray fox, maybe a few months old.

I was going to say cat, but now that I look at some photos I'm on #TeamGreyFox

We had a little guy come into camp in the SAK , Grey Fox

I'd say coyote. To me the tail looks much too short to be a cat or a fox. I found this website with a straightforward comparison of foxes and coyotes:

http://foxsurvey.ucdavis.edu/id.html

In your picture I think I see a black tip to the tail but (apparently) if it were a grey fox the tail would also have a black stripe running down its length. I've never seen a grey fox but all the descriptions I've found online include the black stripe on the tail. I love a good mystery.

Rear end of a Snowshoe Hare. Kwazy Wabbitt.

Short legged animal with a ton of fur. Not a wolf for sure and I don't think a coyote or grey fox either.

What time of year was the picture?

Here is a grey fox
To those who said grey fox-here is a grey fox.

A Lynx? I think what seems to be tail fluff is just the effect of slow shutter speed.

Oooh, do I hate to suggest this possibility:

Never heard of the Minnesota raccoon dog, either? We are lucky
