Please give any tips for a mid Sept. trip. We have done many trips in mid July but My son is scheduling a trip in mid September with a few pals from all over the US. They are going to use an outfitter but as far as weather I know it can be tricky has anyone camped in mid September what was it like? Are 50 degree days really cold or does the sun provide some warmth? What time does sunset? A new experience!! Please share tips and experiences.Thanks!

In my opinion it's the best time of the year. No bugs, little chance of it being really hot, you'll see rain but severe weather is not common. Leaves are just starting to change color. Wildlife that is out around sunrise comes out later, and those that come out at dusk come out earlier. Water is still semi-warmish. Nights can be really cool as I have seen lows just below freezing but then I have seen lows in the lower 60's as well. The days are much shorter. Fog in the a.m. is very common. Sunset is around 7:15 p.m. and sunrise is around 6:45 a.m. if I recall.

What northwoodsman said. I love paddling the BW in Sept. Just make sure you'll be ready for cool/cold nights, but don't bother putting on any mosquito repellant.

As to your thoughts about 50º days, I never experienced anything below 60º in Sept and was always comfortable.

Myself and 7 other friends just came out of Lac La Croix on Sept 8th, morning was 40 degrees.
Sept 9th woke up to 30 degrees. Worse part was non stop winds. When I felt sort of safe to measure wind speeds they hit 22.5 MPH. All day, all night. Benn going into BWCA for twenety years in September and always thought that we might get one of these trips.
Prepare for cold and some wind bound days.

Watch the weather patterns, right now it appears a dry spell with seasonable temps and no strong winds except the 20th. And pack a set of thermal wear just in case. Even if the weather cooperates having warm backup is nice if you dump. Water temps are cool for swimming, but not dangerous.
The sun is in the sky only 12 hours so plan some dark time activities. I would add plan on shorter travel days, but with the increased use it will be good to stop early anyway. And star gazing and hopes for northern lights are great.
I generally go somewhere where it is a day to travel in, base and explore rather than travel a loop to see as much as possible. In the autumn of my life fall tripping fits me very well. This year going in Brule with base plans on Cherokee. I am packed except for food and electronics that are charging.

September can be quite variable. In 2009 when we were up 6-12 September we had clear skies, warm (75+) temperatures and six days of beautiful weather. Calm, clear, and quiet.

Just returned from the same week up there, 6-12 September and we wore our wool shirts almost every day. Some nice skies, some gloom, a bit of drizzle but not much. Tuesday the 8th had 30 degrees and a heavy frost. Thursday the 10th was some warmer but strong winds most of the day.

In September you should be prepared for just about anything. I found myself wishing I had packed the Smartwool underwear. And we were in a cabin!
