Spent opener weekend bow hunting as usual. Friday was quiet with no deer sighted. Saturday was a touch cooler and overcast, had a small 8 walk by at about 8:45 but just out of range. At 3:45 had a spike show up that kept wanting to leave but I kept him coming back with grunts a doe calls. He gave me a good broadside/slight quartering away shot right at 20 yards so I couldn't pass it up. But...I rushed the shot a little (rookie mistake) and the shot ended up a touch high but I thought still ok. Well it turned out not to be ok. He ran off about 60 yards and then stopped and walked away never to be seen again.

I got on first blood right before dark just to get it marked and then came back a bit later to track as i wanted to give him some time. First blood looked ok but it turned to nothing almost immediately. I followed the tiniest drops for about 20 yards and then I lost it all together. The fog set in and everything go wet and my head lamp reflected off the fog and made it almost impossible to see. I was on my hands and knees for several hours tracking blood and looking for the next spot. Finally packed it in for the night at 9pm. Went back out first light the next morning to take up the search again but a grid search didn't turn up anything. No blood, no bed, no arrow, no deer. I've got to assume the arrow was higher than I thought and it just hit muscle. In that case he'll be find but might have a little extra decoration before the arrow works its way out. Hoping for the best for him.

Saw a ton of deer on Sunday including a really nice 8 pointer but I had given up on hunting sunday in favor of looking for the deer I shot on Satuday. Didn't feel right shooting another one not knowing about the first one. Tough way to end a season but live and learn.

I thank you for your dedication in looking so hard to find him. We need more people like that in the woods.
