I recently got a Garmin 64sx, and being completely dumb when it comes to technical stuff, I ordered the Redpine PaddleNav chip thinking it would be a plug and play type of thing. I inserted the chip, but am not seeing anything PaddleNav related under the “select map” menu. I also don’t see any different details when I move the map up to the boundary waters area.

I plugged the unit into my wife’s laptop and it shows the E drive as the Garmin and the F drive is paddlenav, so it must be reading the chip. I’m sure I’m missing something super simple. Any ideas?

Not sure if this holds true for this particular chip, but did you try zooming in closer on parts of the BWCAW area? Sometimes, that's what it takes.

When I put one of my three Garmin chips in my garmin montana unit, you need to select what map you want to use. Funny you don’t see that. Did you email PaddleNav? I also thought it was a plug and play chip.

"

I did zoom clear in and I get the same amount of detail both with and without the chip in the unit

On my 62st display map, press menu
Select Map
Enable
go to map
This is with Red Pine installed on a micro chip that in the GPS but works the same way with maps installed directly to GPS internal memory.

Yeah, from the directions on the package I expected to see the map show up in the list.
I actually bought the chip from the Piragis store. In looking for the redpine mapping website, it appears to no longer exist. I’m afraid I’m probably out of luck for support from them. I might have to try calling Garmin

My menu looks the same as Butthead’s. There are 5 maps in there that I can enable or disable, but none of them are the PaddleNav. The detail on my map is nowhere near as good as that screenshot

Is there anything else I need to do when I put the chip in besides turn the unit on? My assumption is that it should load the map off the chip when it boots up.

Sorry to ask the obvious, but, none of the maps are 'RedPineMapping.com,' either?

Sound like a miss installed chip or a bad chip. What I displayed was today's install of my BWCA Quetico map chip that has the Red Pine Map Loaded onto it. Red Pine has been on and off line over the years and now seems the domain is for sale.
Stimpy do you have a Red Pine BWCA Quetico chip or a download (what I have and good for 5 installations) on a chip?
The map need to be enabled in menu to display. If it's not showing on the list something is wrong with the chip.

I have the actual red pine chip, not the download. Tonight I went through all the maps in the menu and enabled them one at a time and zoomed in on the BW area. None of them are paddlenav. I also watched some videos online to ensure I was inserting the chip correctly. I’m starting to think I just got a bad chip. I found some old contact info for red pine that I’m going to try before I return the chip to Piragis.

Thanks so much to everyone for taking the time to help. It is much appreciated

Well, since it's showing up as an external drive, it must be installed okay. I'll go with butthead's guess of bad chip. Good luck.

Stimpy, I have a 2 downloaded to chips, what's left of the 5 initial downloads. If you get no-where with Red Pine one is yours. I no longer use them as I have custom full featured USGS 7.5 topos with the added tracks/waypoints.

Butthead, thanks for the generous offer.

Just to update what I’ve learned: I tried to contact red pine mapping by email. That ended up coming back as undeliverable, so I called Piragis. They claimed that red pine was not out of business, but were hard to get ahold of. They were going to get ahold of red pine and have them call me.
A few days later Piragis called back and left a message that red pine must have gone out of business because they couldn’t reach them either.
They said I should just send the chip back for a refund. I do appreciate the customer service from Piragis.

The only thing they could think of is that the chip isn’t compatible with the 64sx. They thought it worked with the 64st but the sx wasn’t on the list. Dunno?

Offer's still viable. Should be no reason the 64sx can't display it. My email is listed if interested even just to try.

Something I forgot about. The Red Pine chip may be a returned chip to Piragis. Meaning it may have been used and locked to the original purchaser's GPS. I have done about a dozzen GPS units for members and now I think all the maps I made were done with the individual's GPS in my possession connected to my computer. Getting old is just that, memory has turned to mush.
Todd, if we can get together I still offer to load an micro chip for you with maps but that may require the use of your GPS on my computer.

Hands on the GPS Friday, Saturday installed some maps. Now working fine.
Mostly sure the chip as either bad or had been installed/registered to another system.
