Squee!!! Three of my favorite things all in one -- a historic building, books, and canoe country!! I was so bummed when they built the new library. I know they were having trouble with books walking off from the old library and needed a more centralized space, but I really, really loved that old building. Sigh. I sure hope someone into preservation will buy this and make it something great without first going through and gutting or Home Depot-ing it beyond recognition.
And, while we're dreaming, if someone buys the old hospital and restores it I would love a tour.

In this day and age, someone stealing and reading books almost seems like a good thing. :)

Ha Ha, a college professor I know who has a cabin near my mine and has got broken into a couple of times used to say, "Just fill your cabin full of books, they won't steal a thing"
May the rivers be crooked and winding, and your portages lonesome, leading to the most amazing view.

Is this the building that often had the yellow fire truck parked beside it? If it's the building I'm thinking of: A long time ago someone told me there is a shower in the basement (I think it was the basement) that one could use after coming out. He told me to walk right in and use it. I didn't believe it... but then I walked right in and used it!

I did indeed rock down to Electric Avenue, but I did not take it higher. I regret that.

Great! If someone buys it, I'd like to rent out the basement. : )

With 20% down, for a 30-year fixed mortgage with a 3.5% interest rate, you would be looking at a $284 monthly payment. That's cheap rent if you were to buy it.
I do love art deco and it sounds beautiful and of the highest quality inside.
I will paddle eternal, Kevlar and carbon.

Great idea!
I have distinct memories of that place, and made some life-changing decisions there while one of my children was happily ensconced in a comfy chair with a pile of books - leaving me free to think through things.

Harv: "1. The 79k price is more then what they had "sold" it for recently.
2. I've heard that there needs to be about 2 million in upgrades for the lucky winner"
Eh, I could do it on the cheap with a buck fidy and by watching a few how-to-do YouTube videos.

Hired!
Ms Goof and I are currently getting bids on removing and refinishing popcorn ceilings from our 1300 sq ft home in St. Paul. The sticker shock is real. I can see expenses would snowball on a 30,000 sq ft building.

GG, I'll eliminate your popcorn ceilings from above with a jackhammer. In case you haven't realized, my help is less than worthless.

I’ll put up the first $1k.
Where are the next 78 founding members of the Flying Moose co-op bunkhouse?!?"
Count me in!"
And me! Let's lowball the offer to $35K.
We all have to believe in something. I believe I'll go paddle.
