Photo centered more-or-less ESE-ish. Canoe itself more SE.

I took this photo on the portage into the lake in question.

Beaver.
Resembles the portage between beaver and adams. Since the bluff would be on your left going toward Beaver that will be my guess.

In this first photo, you cannot quite see the actual firegrate, but if someone were wearing orange and standing next to the firegrate, they would be visible just slightly left of the right edge of the photo.
See arrow.

Another small hint:
The portage shown in the photo looks like a sufferfest, and though it's not easy it is fairly short, maybe 150 meters. Overall not too bad. It does gain some elevation, perhaps ~50 feet.

Edit: I said 150 meters - but lest anyone think this is Quetico, since I realize I did not specify in the first post...this lake is in the BWCA. And I'm sticking with 150 meters, because there is no real way to tell how many rods that might be. :)

Google says 150 meters = 29.825.....rods.
Divide length value by 5.029.
Think I'll stick to feet to rods, easier math.

Your sorcery is beguiling.

Might you be estimating the length of the portage because its length is not listed.....because it is not maintained?! And you can't see the firegrate in the campsite, because the site is also not maintained?!

cowdoc: "Frost"

That would make the picture right before the left turn back to the portage to unload.

And the first camp site should be almost directly to the canoe's left.

The portage looks right.

There should be some tall rock faces on that south shore, but if it's frost they may start a little further west from what you see in the pic.

Edit: just read the update about the fire grate. Not frost.

Yeah, those were the things I saw when I took a wild guess with Frost. I've done some further sleuthing and now I'm left with just a feeling of happiness and satisfaction ;)

Thumbs up, Cowdoc...it's almost within your grasp.

Whiskey Jack?
But that doesn't seem to fit with the portage length hint..

Cowdoc clearly knows the answer, and appears to be giving others a chance to name his lake.

I'll be out for a few hours, but if nobody else has it when I get back, we'll do the reveal and pass the baton to Cowdoc.

That was a clever clue. I am not sure WHICH lake. It looks like some of the country below Cross Bay like Swollen Ankle, but I didn't totally like that answer.

But then codoc said what he did.

Now I too am filled with feelings of Contentment.

Contentment

Looks like TrreBear may have beat me to the answer.

I am Satisfied - the answer has been Grasped!

Contentment it is...Portage in comes from Thumb, which is adjacent to Finger.

Still pretty impressed with Cowdoc parsing my sentence structure to figure out that the portage is unmaintained and the campsite is decommissioned. Really well done.

TreeBear, you are on point for round 26.
