Heading out to Saganaga for the first time and we arrive this Thursday 5/20. It has been a cold spring and I have done as much research as possible about early season fishing for lake trout and walleye.

Well now, there has been a major warmup there. Supposed to be 80 up there today and stay in the 70s all week. With us arriving on Thursday, how does this affect fishing? I am hoping the walleye will turn on? How would you change your tactics with the sudden warm weather? Lastly, will this weather push the lake trout out deeper yet or is it too early for that?

It is also supposed to rain up there every day after being dry all spring. Will that affect the fishing?

Thank you!

I would say there are going to be some variables at play here. Like Lake size and depth. But it's all about water temps. With that said I think a good warm up should get most fish more active with the exception of trout. I'll be heading up in 2 weeks. If the water temps are in the high 50's low 60's I'll probably start looking for walleye in the 10-12' range. And then shallow during the dark hours.

It might be in the 80s early this week, but a cold front will push through by the weekend. Im good with the cloud cover, but it looks like I will be spending some quality time with my rain gear.

A few days here or there shouldn't impact the whole lake's water temps that much this soon. I'd stick with your usual plans

Is this your first time on Sag?

If so, I’d suggest a guide the first day or two

Sag is deep and drops off quickly from the shoreline in most places.
I’ve fished it 3times now and I’m just now getting used to “how” to fish the lake.

Good luck!

Should be interesting fishing basswood on Sunday. First the heat, then the tstorms, and then high of 56 on Sunday.
