Been up to the BWCA many times. This year headed into Basswood for the 1st time. What are your opinions on base camping in Pipestone or heading to the no-motor zone. Fishing is the priority. (Bass, pike, walleye in that order.) Any tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Going in the 2nd week of June. Two people.
Are there any campsites to stay away from? (I read a comment that a couple are infested with mice.)
Meanwhile - I’ll be looking at past threads. Feel free to private message.
I personally didn't mind the boat area for a quick trip. Obviously it's a huge lake and wind can be downright scary. Last Sept we had massive waves and we had to pick a spot earlier than we'd like. It turns out it was a nice 4* site so it worked out.
If you can get up to the Lewis Narrows there's plenty of nice sites up there. Decent walleye and pike fishing. Not sure about bass.
We will be staying in Lewis Narrows, entering in on Saturday and spending most of the next week. If I remember once I am back out ill gladly give you a fishing report.
We generally stay at site 1564 or 1565 (this one is better for bigger groups). We always go in this week and fishing is generally pretty darn good, just hoping that the early ice out doesn't change the normal spots. I do recommend making the portage into back bay for the pan fishing, no reason you shouldn't be able to find bass and pike in there also.
A heads up in case you haven't seen the post of a bear on Pipestone already this year. My wife and I had a small walk into camp last year. I ran him off, but he'll be bigger this year. I would surmise it's the same 1 spotted this year.
