Heading up thru Minneapolis on Thursday to meet my buddy in Willow River before heading onto Ely for four days of fishing. I normally take I-35 east to avoid the city.

What's construction like? I will be pulling a boat around 1:00 pm.

Thanks for replies.

Short stretch of I35E is being repaved this summer between I94 and University Ave (just north of downtown St. Paul). I haven't been through there to see if it has started. Not sure about anything else on that side of town. It has been pretty quiet. Avoid I35W! Big delays.

I've been driving from the south metro up to Forest Lake almost every weekend for the last several weeks and I would say it depends what time of day and day of the week you're going through. Sometimes google maps sends me by 35W and sometimes 35E, depending on traffic and construction activity. 35W is not always backed up, although 1pm on a weekday is probably a good time to avoid 35W.

AVOID 35W North from Highway 36 up to the 35W/35E merge. Some days there are 2 bypass lanes, some days there are only one, but every day there is a backup especially as you get closer to the 694 onramp.

That whole length is just a swear word now.

It's a mess a lot further south than that. Personally I wouldn't go anywhere near 35W north of Hwy 62 right now. So many eff-bombs.

Yogi I can't guarantee you 35E won't have some slow spots but it's the best route right now for sure.

Adam. Just went to South Bend , Indiana for my daughter graduation. Man, that section of I-80 from the Indiana border to just pass I-57 is ridiculous. 5 lane traffic.
I seen the after math of 4 accidents. And seen the 5th.
An oversize load turned over on an entrance ramp. 6 large tow trucks with cables everywhere.
Just hot passed it and was picking up speed.in the oncoming lanes (east bound) i was (west bound)
Bam, the on coming traffic was slowing to view the accident. One car rear-ended another. Both cars just exploded. One car got airborne hit the ground.
The underside was clearly visible to me.
Hit the ground barrel rolled twice.Hit another car and carremened into the barriers separating the lanes right next to me I swerved. It moved the barriers about 3 feet but it held.... WOW. I was almost toast.

Moral of story,
ANY TIME ANY WHERE....

Drive safe in your adventures this summer.

I'd agree. It's not to bad from 62 crosstown up to about Diamond Lake (just shy of 46th exit) but then the fun begins. You might get through without too much delay around midday. However, the only time I have seen it with little to no traffic was late in the day around 6PM and only heading north. Heading south was backed up with evening rush. That section north of 36 can be a huge slowdown. If you can track it on your phone's map, it might be able to give you construction updates to take 35E or 494 to swing way wide of downtown.

I usually leave at 3 or 4am to head north which is a different story all together :)

I am likely running up to the BWCA for a short trip over Memorial weekend. I have successfully avoided coming home on that monday, for at least 20 years, because the last time I did that, it was over 4 hours from Hinckley to St. Paul. 5 mph for much of it. However, we are going in on Sat, and coming out on Monday.

Is 35 traffic coming south still like that on Memorial Monday?
