After reading the statement from the permit information regarding the abuse the campsites were under last year, how has everyone found the sites this year? What should be done to keep the abusers accountable?

I've visited two campsites this year and camped at one of those two. Both were in fine shape with no complaints, trash, or other noteworthy comments. I would imagine higher traffic areas close to entry points are always going to see the most site abuse just because there are more people who have the opportunity to leave a trace.

Our pattern held true to last year unfortunately. Sites further in were fine, the last night on Disappointment.... well it was a disappointment.... two packets of ramen noodles in the shallows.... at least a full packet of shells dumped 8' from the fire grate.... fish tossed into the one spot you would swim...

That was over memorial day weekend.

I came out on Alton and glanced at some sites along the way and picked up garbage from both of them :(

There is a little glacial pothole of a lake I visit for swimming, close to home, clear water and just a couple of miles down a logging road. There are two "camp sites" accessible from shore (dispersed camping) often used on the weekends and the fire pits are left with charred plastic, bottles and cans- toilet paper in the woods and even along the lakeshore. I've carted out partially charred blow up float chairs, endless amounts of cans and bottles, broken glass etc. Last weekend I went for a swim and there were three young couples with three dogs occupying the sites- loads of gear, even a stand up grill. When I went back for a swim yesterday the place was pristine- immaculate, they'd policed down to the level of twist tie and gum removal. My hats off to this group of twenty somethings.

Just before fishing opener I stayed at a site on Knife I was at last year and it was trashed. 5 piles of green boughs, a limbed down green tree in camp, several cans and lots of foil in the fire pit. A live cedar tree hacked into and a fir tree on edge of camp had 10 branches hacked off. TP piles behind the tent pad. Poo on the latrine. Ropes hanging from trees that were cut instead of untied. Assorted trash like plastic forks, Jelly containers etc. A glass jar tossed in the woods just behind the fire pit, and a whiskey bottle laying on the main tent pad. I have reason to suspect it was from last year. This was not the result of a lack of awareness of LTN principles - this was a belligerent rejection of them.

I photographed everything, cleaned up and packed out everything, restacked the fire pit, and reported it to the FS on exiting.

It's not just in the BW that sites are trashed. We have been going to a small remote lake in the Chequamegon for 30 years. After you cross a large moto lake there is only 1 portage, or you can hike in from the north. 3 primitive sites, not even latrines. We always visit all 3, just to see changes, and the dog can only fish for a limited time. 2 are always pretty clean. The 3rd site, which was just off the north trail, used to be great. For years there has been a bottle pile into a ravine. This year we found a 7 foot stovepipe, 2 fry pans, grill rack, tongs , flippers. And what looks like a large lawn chair with the cloth part removed and 4 notched tree branches arranged in a square on the seat edge. It looks like it might have been used as a commode. All int the main tent area. . Definetely more stuff than we could haul out.

Two trips 2020 EP 47 and 50 one trip this year so far EP47 The sites I stayed on and all I paddle by were in very good condition, actually in some aspects, better then in previous years. A hundred people can practice LNT but it takes only one ahole to trash a site.
