In the moment I thought this was a cow, but after slowing down the video it sure looks like this moose has a small set of antlers budding in front of its ears.
This was last week on the Gunflint Trail. We were so focused on getting the video and watching the moose run directly in front of us that we didn't really get any good photos, so this screen shot will have to do. The moose ran across the inlet from one side to the other, stopped, then ran back across the inlet right in front of us and scampered down the beach. I was literally standing in the water pulling our boat through a shallow spot and he was maybe 10-15 yards away when he came splashing into the inlet. Coolest wildlife experience of my life!

cyclones30: "Nice! If it's a male you should also see some.....things hanging down if you're at the right angle.
Either way, whatever it is that's a cool story "
Haha. We never got that intimate, but I'll have to look back at the video footage and see if anything is... dangling.

PeaceFrog: "Pretty sure that is a young bull. Looks like he has his nubs in front of his ears which is the developing rack."
That was my thought process. I don't see any dangles in the video, but we can't all be Dirk Diggler!

Mama probably just kicked him out with her last litter,
i've been fortunate to have a few moose incounters , 1 was maybe to close about 10yds from a trophy bull moose during mating season. it was just off the portage behind a big tree , then i saw the cow he was after just about 15yds further in.

This was only our second moose. Last June we spooked one driving down toward chick-wauk and that was over before it started. I drive a lot slower since then!
If anyone wants to see the 40 second video just shoot me an email.

Years ago we were just leaving a portage and had to go thru a short stream out to the lake. We kept hearing noises off to our left. Suddenly, a very large bull moose came crashing through the trees and right in the middle of the stream; and stopped. It looked at us for a moment and then decided to scamper off. I did manage to get a photo of him as he was leaving. At the time it was super cool. Later I realized we had no out if he had decided to come at us.

That was exactly what i was thinking as I was standing ankle deep in the water with nothing between the moose and I. Not nearly as intimidating as that big boy with the the rack, but still. My kid was in the boat and my instinct was to put myself between the animal and my kid, but then I was pretty vulnerable. Luckily I think the boys are pretty docile this time of year. The rut could be a different story. Or a Cow protecting her calf.

This big guy walked in the shallows right in front of my solo campsite. The campsite was elevated so I was looking downward and got some great pictures.
I walked over and stood at the top of the path coming up from the lake, he was about 50' away. Stood still, took some more pictures and a short video, we looked at each other for maybe a half minute, then he just walked silently into the willows along the shore next to camp and I never heard or saw him again.
As good as it gets
