It’s definitely a start. It looks like we can start planning our trips to the Q next summer.

I read elsewhere that Canada will also require a negative covid test within 72 hours of your planned crossing.

Terrible piece of journalism. The article says nothing about land borders opening up, only mentions some airports. Are land borders opening or not? The article says there has not been any word from the US, but Canadians have been permitted to fly into the US for a long time. Sounds like Canada might finally start to reciprocate a little.

Funny, I can hear George Constanza in that reply perfectly.

Covid-19: Canada Travel, Testing, etc rules.

That link hasn't been updated since July 16th, so it probably doesn't account for the news from today but it will give you all the rules that are already in place for Canada travel. I can only guess that the rules for Americans visiting Canada won't differ much from what is in place. Start reading.

Yes, land border will open but there will be additional steps, such as pre testing and a quarantine plan. We'll find out more as time goes on. Either way, it's a step in the right direction.

To be fair, the press conference with the Health Minister is currently in progress.

If you click on that link, you will see on the right, ‘now playing…Minister Patti Hajdu…blah blah’ Click on that to hear details.

The actual Announcemt details will probably be on the Canadian Border Services Agency CBSA website later today.

The RABC site still says it isn't accepting applications. That's a delay even if the border opens on the 9th except for driving across and entering from Canada.

I found this nugget in the link…

“ Officials also announced today that as of Aug. 9, children under 12 — who aren't yet approved to receive a vaccine — will be exempt from the quarantine requirement after entering Canada and can move around with their parents if they follow public health measures.”

We have a family trip scheduled on the Gunflint the last week of August. The kicker is my 11 year old who will soon be eligible for vaccination but not in time for the trip. I may try for a Q north entry point instead.

I don’t anticipate the RABC program being reinstated this year. It should be since it is essentially contactless, but I am guessing the Canadians want proof of vaccination and they haven’t quite figured out the process or are waiting until vaccinations might not be necessary.

Don't forget the PCR test required for travel is not covered under your health insurance most likely.

I have looked up some prices near me and the faster results cost over $200 a person.

Still free in NYC. Kind of out of your way I suppose.

Contacted the Thunder Bay Ranger Station and the information on the border opening was not good. They said the only change being made is to land border stations not water. Additionally, the RABC program will remain suspended indefinitely . Not good news for getting into Quetico in 2021.

Does that mean we can’t drive to border to get an RABC in person?

If so, then the only option for a US citizen to get into Quetico would be through North/ Atikokon right?

I wouldn’t be surprised if the RABC program is replaced by ArriveCAN in the future.

Got a call from the RABC folks this morning. The program is still suspended with no start date in sight. Applications will only be accepted after the program is reinstated (I sent in an application last week with the request that it be held and processed when the program was resumed).

I think I agree. Call Quetico office, I'm sure they'll know. No reason to staff the south ranger stations with no RABCs.
