I have been researching updating our first aid kit for our dog and someone on a sheltie form I'm on suggested a bloat kit. I was looking at that when I read that there is a pressure point on dogs that can help them with bloat. Now I'm not one to really buy into the pressure points, but there is a lot of people who claim it has worked. I thought I would post it here and if for some reason you are camping and have nothing else you, can do you can try it.

Here is a YouTube video talking about the bloat kits and other options for bloat

Here is a webpage showing where the pressure point it

I have worked in an ER vet for the past 16 years. True bloat is a surgical emergency. If there was a pressure point that would alleviate it, believe me, ER vets would use it!

Shelties are not a high risk breed. If you do have a high risk breed (Danes, labs, Rotties, etc- large deep chested dogs), they is a minor surgery that can be done at the same time as the spay in females- the stomach can be tacked to the body wall. The stomach can still fill up with gas, but much harder to twist. Less of an emergency.

Our first dog died of bloat at 6 years old. He was a springer. I ran across this and thought it was interesting. Thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear that....very sad. I know what that is like, I lost one as well.

The tube and trochar can be used to buy some time, but you don't have long, even with them. Hours, really. So if you're way out in the boonies, chances are poor.
