These were great paddling boats--we bought an Old Town Columbia in 1988, also fiberglass, but weighing in at ~60 pounds. In 2017 or so, when trying to reduce our portage weights, I contacted Old Town to see if they offered the Columbia hull design in lighter materials, but were disappointed to learn that Old Town doesn't offer canoes in the 17-18 foot range that I care to carry. It appears they haven't heard of Kevlar or carbon fiber...

I stand corrected! I remember now that when we ordered our Columbia in late 1988, Kevlar was an option. It only dropped the canoe's weight 5 pounds and was many dollars more--at the time I could afford the weight more than I could afford the option. When I contacted them before buying our Northstar Northwind 17, I asked Old Town what they had in the 17 foot, 40 pound range, they had nothing.
