Finally getting some time to work on my new canoe.

Got the Northstar Stealth Northwind 17 with internal skid plates last February.

Weight: I officially weighed it tonight 34.5#

Installed tie offs and rope holders up under the carbon end caps—Hidden no picks.

Installed fish measuring tape

Added low profile mounts: Thanks Dschult2 for the encouragement that I could do this myself…was actually easy.

That is a sexy boat! Over or under $4k?

What did you use/buy for the fish tape?

Using the yoke as-is or any sort of padding going on it?

In case my wife is trolling I can't answer the first question :) I was going to get a Savage River custom boat but this one was available now and much cheaper. Not cheap...just less than I was planning...Been planning a purchase since 2020.

Fish tape, just searched Amazon for decal tape measure then cut it down to what I wanted. fish ruler decal for boat

I am adding yoke pads. I have Superior Portage black pads but I am going to add a rubberized coating the clamps instead of metal grinding on the carbon yoke. Although it doesn't feel like i need pads...it will once I am 100 yards into the woods.

Wow that’s one beautiful boat! What exactly are internal skid plates? And what are the mounts for?

Here is a photo I stole from this website of a canoe with external skid plates. It’s just extra fabric in the bow and stern where the most wear and tear takes place. The negatives are it adds a very slight amount of drag and how it looks for some. Most manufacturers offer internal skid plates. They add a layer or two of kevlar/innegra in the bow and stern for extra protection but it’s under the outside layer so doesn’t show. I believe it is stronger than doing an external skid plate and looks better too in my opinion at least.

My previous canoe, souris River Q18.5 had internal skid plates as well and never needed external even after 18 years of use. I believe that is still the case but correct me if I am wrong…it was bought by a fellow member on this board.

The mounts are Scotty low profile rail mounts. You can quick mount a depth finder, rod holder, camera etc. Saves weight than doing a clamp on and is quicker. I learned about it on this website from Bamthor (used similar RAM) and Deshult2.

I wonder why they don't make some of these parts, like the yoke, decks, maybe gunnels out of forged carbon instead of carbon fiber. Costs tend to be equal these days, but especially for more complex shapes, forged carbon can be easier or faster to do which can indirectly lower the final cost. Functionally it's all the same, at least for our purposes, so whatever. I'm still curious, though.

Thanks! Your post last November is part of the reason I got this! Didn’t even know they existed, was all set on ordering a Savage River, then read your old post about the stealth layup. Then another post brought it up, so I emailed a bunch of vendors and Piragis replied back they had one in stock. The fact I could buy local, made by a MN canoe company, and most importantly no wait time to build it, sold me.

That's one beautiful boat, T. Midwest Mountaineering has a Polaris with E6 gunwales and they look amazing on the StarLite hull, but the Stealth... that's got some class. I'd be afraid to bang it up on rocks!! My B17 has internal skid plates as well, which weren't something I was interested in, but they will be of no detriment whatsoever considering I like to get the boat on shore instead of fiddle around with keeping my feet dry, and this sometimes means banging it on rocks. :)

Congrats. I hope to see some photos of it on the water soon!

Very nice! You'll love those Scotty mounts.

Stunning! Three things. First, knowing you, the tape measure is not long enough. Second, can you tell me where you ordered this beauty?

Finally, here is an option to consider for yoke pads that is inexpensive and made by Swift canoes. It is a soft gel pad that straps on to the yoke; they have been making carbon yokes for some time, and the price is pretty sweet-especially given the Canadian/US exchange. You could try this and not mar that beautiful yoke and literally only be out a few bucks if you do not like it.

A little cheaper than that pad but virtually the same is the Level 6 Helium yoke pad. I use on on my 17' Nova Craft.

Nice; less expensive is always good! Well, almost always...

Frenchy19…we’ve been blessed this year on finding awesome canoes eh?

Where did I get it? I got mine at Piragis, I emailed every canoe dealer I was willing to drive to and Piragis answered right away. I wasn’t really 100% sure I wanted one, I was looking at another canoe…but put a deposit down immediately and then about an hour later bought it :) I’ve never bought anything from Piragis or outfitted with them but they were awesome to deal with. Gave me tour of the new canoe shed/barn they built. They seemed just as excited as I was about the canoe :)

Frenchy19 and mschi772 thanks for giving ideas on how to spend more money…LOL actually I appreciate the ideas for portaging.

Gorgeous canoe! You're gotta love that light portage weight. The carbon bits are just awesome! Curious, how did you install rope holds under the carbon decks? Enjoy that boat!

I had a left over purchase called “lash it”. I hope it holds, it is really old, but I don’t need a lot of strength—it’s just holding the rope out of the way. Similar product now is Boat bungee I cut the adhesive piece down a little. It fits on the underside of the end caps and then I bungee the ropes in there. It’s accessible but out of the way from hooking a lure or something on it.

I’ll tie the rope off to the stem loops unless I figure something better out.

Thanks T for the reply. I'll check out the boat bungee option. The Trillium has carbon decks and what not. My lame solution was a bungee hoop combined with rubber wire tie-downs over the top. Under is better and more out of the way. Thanks again.
