New Trip Report posted by Shug

Trip Name: 7 Day Solo Missing Link, Snipe, Rib, Cherokee, Frost, Snipe and out Part 1

Entry Point: 51

Just paddled again for a 7 day solo. Such a time. Had a stellar moose encounter.
Love those short backpacking trips they call portages whilst wearing a canoe as a hat.
Rented a Northstar Magic canoe at Rockwood. Bunked at Tuscarora first night.
Lively wee canoe.
Great to meet Andy at Tuscarora. What a scrumptious breakfast.

Route was from Missing Link to Snipe (favorite lake!) to Cross Bay, Rib, Lower George, Karl, Long Island, Gordon, Frost, Cherokee then back.

Slept in Superior Hammock Starlite Elite, JRB 40º Shenandoah Ultralite TQ, Wilderness Logics 40º UQ. Superior Gear Shelter. First time using it and really liked it!

Slept deeply. Paddled goodly. Fished poorly. Ate majestically.
Whooooooo Buddy)))))

Longer trip needed to match the stride.

Looking good! Dry bags with water for ballast help out in an otherwise empty solo, for future reference...

Yessir....post-dumping I went an grabbed my foodbag to toss in for ballast. I'll be adding a dedicated dry bag from now on on solos with lively canoes.

I used to use rocks but started bringing 2 dry bags for the stern with my 50 lb. pooch in front.

Spectacular moose footage shug. The beaver really was comfortable as no tail slap for you. And I think bringing both double and single blade paddles is a great way to go. Group solos are fun too. In 2019 our group had 4 solos and one tandem in Quetico for 12 nights. Really fun if you manage to get nice big sites.

BTW, it's because of you that I'm into hammock camping. I got a Warbonnet Blackbird and prototype Superfly tarp (it has snaps on the 4 door panels) in 2009 after you reviewed them. Still in action today along with my "pup tent" for the pup. Happy paddlin' Shug good to see you out there.

I will be doing the dry bag thing. But when filled with water does that not now make it a wet bag?
Had some really good wildlife moments. I hope they enjoyed looking at me as well.

Just a tip for dry bagging’ - 2 mediums are much easier to handle and clip in the canoe vs one monster bag. You also could put Bean in your bow. He looks to be good ballast weight.

It would be fun to see you hook up with Jon and Xander for a trip. That could be entertaining for all involved.

Enjoyed your YouTube vid, Shug. I felt your pain of being shamed/humbled by that canoe, but it's happened to all of us, best to get it out of the way in the warm season!

Thanks Shug! Great videos as usual! I especially enjoyed this one as I have been on all of those lakes and like you, had an amazing moose encounter on Snipe. My buddy Dan and I had just launched our canoes (solo) after coming off the portage from Missing Link when we had our encounter with the big guy below….this was in September 2018…..maybe the same guy you encountered?!?! My buddy took the photo.

Shug a Northstar Magic just got posted in the Items to sell or buy forum on here. Really sharp looking boat and nice price.

Love your videos. Never really considered hanging until finding your channel a few years back, now I'm hooked. Hope you get half as much joy in creating this stuff as the rest of do watching it.
