Doing the big one! I'll be heading to Lake Itasca in a couple weeks.
Looking for something big and light. At least 17' and preferably made from royalex, tuffstuff, or Kevlar. Not interested in anything too narrow like many of the Wenonahs.
I'm driving in from Maine. I have a Subaru Outback with a roof rack that I think I can get a canoe on, but if you can deliver to Itasca, that would be amazing.
Do you want a true solo? Or to fit that much gear are you wanting something like a solo plus or small tandem you could paddle backwards?
How much gear will you have with you? In volume and weight....then look @ models from there. And yes, an Advantage would be VERY fast and efficient but not super stable nor fit a lot of gear. But a Basswood solo or lots of others are very different.
I'm used to soloing in big tandems. A big solo would be nice though. I have a 30ltr and 60ltr barrel and a pack. Not an incredible about, but that's not why I want a big boat. I could fit all that in a 16' easy. Need something pretty stable for this river. I'm looking for something that is close to Itasca and will roughly suit my needs. I don't have the luxury of being super particular.
