I'm going to look at a northwind solo at an outfitter this weekend. They have stated that it could use a recoat and have sent me some picture of several patches. They said it is usable as is but if they were to rent it out next year it would be recoated. My question is what is a fair price on this model boat with the stated condition? This is my first time shopping for a solo and I've seen several for sale but non that needed a little work. I have talked to them and know what they want for it, but I'm curious what the experts would say. I know it's hard to say exactly without seeing condition in person, but just hoping for more of a ballpark idea. Any input is appreciated! Thanks!

As you rightly say...hard to tell remotely.

But with multiple patches and in need of a recoat I'd have trouble being much over $1K on that.

Here are the pictures they sent. There's seems to be sun fading as well.

I'm sorry, but I would not buy that boat. It's been through too much already.

The only reason I'm considering it is I'm ok with putting my own time into recoating it. My budget doesn't have room for appearance to be a factor. Ha. Functional is the most important. So this would be considered beyond salvation even though it being an eyesore doesn't bother me?

Ok, I hear you. Given your position and desire for a project, I personally wouldn't go over $500.00 for this boat. My thinking is that tripping canoes are another tool, just like a pack, a knife, a paddle, etc. And like all other tools, regardless of how well you treat them they have a useful life and a time to be retired. To my eyes that canoe has already been ridden hard and thus it's useful life has been very greatly diminished. That being said, if it's still structurally sound perhaps some TLC could bring it back to life. You can see my restoration pics of a Souris River Quetico 17 and a Bell Northwoods black gold. It can be very rewarding.

You may need to forward pictures to Northstar and ask. I called them today about a Northwind 17 I purchased from an outfitter last weekend and both Dan & Bear could not have been more accommodating to answer questions and give expert advice. They have the answers and the best boats in the biz!

I'll have to do that, thanks!

+1!

Ted, Bear, Dan, and Charlie are all wonderful people who’ve always been incredibly helpful. Can’t say enough great things about Northstar and their crew.
