I am trying to identify the model and construction of what I believe is a 90s vintage canoe. I am told it is 17 ft long, This is the best photo I have.

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks,
Don

Only a guess on my part, but the plastic seat with no portage yoke tells me it could be a Discovery 174. That's a heavy bugger, but nearly indestructible on rivers.

Have you thought of emailing the pic to Old Town?

My hunting partner brought his Discovery 17 on our bear hunt in October. It was pretty well matched in hull speed with my Penobscot 17, which was carrying a heavier load at the time. With less weight I'm fairly sure my hull would have been faster.

Here's a photo of another one:

Thanks all.

I am sorta looking for another 17 ft royalex canoe to add to the fleet for a planned Bloodvein trip, but the 80 lb weight of the Discovery makes it impractical.

Pretty much any 17 ft Royalex canoe will be approaching 80#. The 16'9" Disco lists at 91#.

I believe the Penobscot comes in around 65, which is the nominal weight for my Sundowner. At my age, those 15 lbs make a huge difference. :)

It’s necessary to correct some confusion in this thread.

The Discovery was never offered in Royalex in any of its iterations. The Penobscot was offered in Royalex (which I own) and in plastic (which I never had any desire to own or carry ).

Why don't you ask the owner what the model and material is? Most all Old Towne boats have the name on the side.

This boat does not have the model name on the side. All he knows is that it is an Old Town and that it is 17 feet long.

I will not be buying it.

I appreciate all the input.
