I am considering a car camping or trailer trip to Alaska. Either way, I’d probably want to take a bug shelter. I envision something with poles to put it up in places where there is a lack of trees. I do not own a bug shelter for canoe camping. However, if I could find a product that is light and could be used without poles for canoeing and also could be used with poles for car camping, that would be ideal. Anyone have experience with products I could consider?

Eureka No Bug Zone CT would meet your needs. Comes in 2 sizes, poles are a separate purchase and unnecessary if you have trees or can cut poles. Nemo Bug Out is another option but my last one literally fell apart and leaked EVERYWHERE, so I can't recommend it. No Bug Zone is fairly light, and seems well made, but is not super big. Stakes are crappy and heavy so you will want to replace. Poles can be purchased from Eureka, Amazon, REI or pretty much any place that sells camp gear.

What are your dimension requirements, length, width and height?
Will it be used for insect protection only?
Any specific features such as double zippered opening or double zipper pulls?
Why are you opposed to using poles while canoe camping?

I have the 9x9 Nemo Bugout and, unlike mgraber, I have had no problems with it at all. I've had it for 8 years and it has been used at least 3 or 4 times a year, often for multiple days. I pitch it like I do a CCS tarp with a ridgeline so I'm not stressing it a lot. I take one pole when I'm canoe camping and I have always been albe to find an appropriate place to pitch it.

The shelter should be tall enough to stand in (I’m 5’8”, 1.73 m).
It should have room for two people with camp chairs. So, maybe a 9’ X 9’ or 13’ diagonal would be good. ??
Will it be used for insect protection only?
Insect protection and a place to sit on rainy days.
Any specific features such as double zippered opening or double zipper pulls?
Double zippers would be handy.

The less I have to portage the better. When I’m in places like Quetico, the BWCA, Algonquin, or the Adirondacks there are lots of trees.

Moonpath: "I purchased a nemo victory screenhouse last year, I think from piragis. Its a free standing bug tent about 10x10. Back then, it was about $399 or so. Not real light but if you are car camping it would work well."
Yes, the Nemo Victory screen house wood be a good choice for car camping or possibly even base camping but with a trail weight of 14 lbs 1 oz the weight and bulk may be problematic for multiple portaging.
I have 3 free standing screen shelters that are comparable in weight and bulk to the CCS, Nemo and Eureka screened tarps.

I have had both the Nemo and CCS shelters, and the build quality is not even remotely comparable. CCS blows Nemo out of the water, period. Yes, more expensive, but worth every dime.
