Anyone camp in the eastern mountains of Utah near the Colorado border? We drove thru that area years ago and the stars were brighter than I have ever seen them in the BDub. I didn't see many places to camp along I-70

Haven't backpacked Utah, but I often hike the Colorado National Monument, just a few miles from Utah. Beautiful views up, down and all around.

The Colorado NM is definitely worth a visit if you're headed that way. It is on top of a mesa with great views in all directions. The sunsets are right up there with the BWCA. We stayed a second night just to watch it again.

But driving Rimrock Drive is kinda scary for us flatlanders. The only time I was'nt afraid of falling off the mountain was gong through the tunnels.

I really want to get over into Utah and see the Arches. If you get there I'd like to hear about it.

It was a very long time ago, but I do remember that while everyone in the car was saying, "Gee, golly, look at that!", driving up or down, the driver had to keep his eyes on the road 100% of the time, or else!

Another place you think you are going to fall off is the drive to Pikes Peak. A lot of the switchbacks don't have guardrails.

I am actually heading out in a couple days to raft the Colorado River, from Loma (west of Grand Junction) to just inside Utah. The strech of river we are doing is mostly flatwater, and has some amazing hiking, which is the main reason we are going. One of the canyons comes up to the backside of the Colorado National Monument.
