Last Friday my daughter and I had set up camp on Seagull in preparation for an early departure to EP54 the next morning. About 3:00 pm we were sitting and talking near the lake, enjoying the cool breezes blowing forest fire smoke in from Canada. She suddenly grabs my arm and at first I thought she had seen a beaver right in front of us, or something like that. I turned to see where she was looking and saw right past her that there was a full grown wolf standing right next to our canoe 20 yards away. It appeared to be a female and was wearing the light summer tawny colors. She saw us, turned, walked over to the water's edge, jumped in, swam across to the adjacent shore, climbed the steep bank, stopped and looked back at us and turned disappearing into the brush.



In all of my BWCA travels I have always had 'hearing wolves howling' on my bucket list. I am now crossing that item off of the list for the stunning close encounter that I never imagined would ever happen.

I saw a wolf on a portage trail last year heading out of Tuscarora Lake. We met each other right on the trail.
Had the same thing happen in Quetico several years ago.

Heard wolves howling in Quetico this year. They are out there.

We were on an island site on Gabbro several years ago and had a lone wolf on the opposite shoreline just casually walking around the shoreline. It was awesome. Had wolves howling on Crocodile just two weeks ago.

I saw wolves swimming around in Horseshoe one time a few days after ice out. At first I thought their heads were ducks until I got close enough to see them. They were just swimming around and frolicking in the water. So cool, especially when they got out of the water and they walked the shoreline.

Wow, what a cool experience! I've had wolves within 40 yards or so while sitting by the fire grate, but it was dark out and I couldn't see them like you were able to.
