Hey all- long time lurker, first time poster. Excited to get up to the BW for the first time since being released from Stillwater. Thinking about Moose Lake/Ensign for a late season trip. Just wanted to know what to expect up there at this time if year. Hoping for few people and good fishing. Probably going solo, but might have a buddy joining. If you see an old, green canoe and a guy with braids and face tattoos (probably smoking!),
Please say hi!

Peace, Ronny

This time of year is extremely varied for weather, so come prepared for the worst. Especially be prepared for wet and cold because that is what gets most people into trouble. Make sure you have warm layers that will keep you warm if they get wet and a good raincoat. The water is getting much colder, so make sure you wear a PFD when on the water and be prepared to sit tight if the wind gets unruly. Most people like to keep their feet dry this time of year as well, so some waterproof, tall boots should be considered. Make sure you have a good insulated sleeping pad. The days feel very short so something to do in the evening is helpful. Have a safe trip!

Wool longjohns and wool socks will still keep you somewhat warm, even when wet. I wouldn't go in October without them. Good luck and have fun!

Be prepared for short days and long nights. Extra batteries for headlamps, a book to read, a pocket shortwave radio to listen to at night when you’re tucked in your sleeping bag because it’s too cold to sit around outside. Shortwave brings in a whole different set of broadcasts, since you probably won’t get many AM or FM stations. Or, a good conversational tripping partner to talk to.

Just got back from two days of paddling. Pretty cool. much cooler than back in the Cities. Talking snow next week. With the cooler temps even a not so strong wind matters. Having said that, bring warm waterproof gear and have fun. Pretty easy to get back to your car from Ensign if things go poorly. We saw no people and the entry point parking lots were empty. You will likely had the place to yourself.
