April 1, 2024 Today, the US Forest Service has announced a new Food Storage initiative for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
This initiative is to encourage visitors to properly hang their Food Packs/Bags & Barrels, or use Bear-proof Canisters or Ursacks to ensure that bears do not become habituated to human food.
The USFS points out that this initiative does not require visitors to follow these Food Storage guidelines, however there will still be a strong incentive for campers to “keep a clean camp”.
Starting immediately, USFS Rangers will set up Bear “Pusher” stations near all major lakes in the Wilderness area, and will keep them stocked with coke.
Forest Supernintendo Chalmers declared: “We expect this to be far more effective than random checks by our Rangers; overnight visitors to the BWCAW will find rampaging Cocaine Bears the perfect motivator."
