Our permit is reserved for August 29th, 2024 with a Lake One entry with 2 people. At this point, our goal is to get east of Alice and away from heavier traffic. We are looking for a great base camp location with good fishing options, either locally or the occasional day trip. Plan to be their 5 or 6 days. We stayed on Malberg entering from Kawishiwi last year and would like to try a different lake or two. Don't mind a long day or day and a half of travel with multiple portages for a good location. Insight on species of fish and techniques is also appreciated. Thanks

Fantastic area! Make sure you don't miss the pictographs on Fishdance, they are just south of the portage from Alice on the western shore. The island campsites on River Lake are fantastic IMO, I spent two nights at 1969 last summer, seeing moose and eating walleye both days. Saw a few other canoeists but nothing like Malberg on the way out. Malberg should be the busiest lake in the area, followed by River. You'll find some seclusion on Beaver or Adams and more on Boulder Fisher or Amber. I had good luck fishing the deeper narrows on River Lake for walleye with a jig and plastic and the shallow boulders on Boulder for smallies with literally anything.

A couple of places I would look:

River Lake/Kawishiwi River - As you portage from Alice to River Lake and turn north toward Malberg. you will find a little channel to Amber Lake. It is a little out of the way lake with one great campsite(Eastern most) on a little sand beach. The western campsite is not much.

Continue north on River Lake and you will come to an island with two campsites on it. The southern is rated a 4 star and the northern a 3, but I don't think you could go wrong with either.
