On my next trip down the Malign River, I was thinking of detouring into Wink for a few days, as it is a lake I have never been on. I have spent a lot of time on Poohbah and have even walked the portage between the two, which is why I am asking this question.

I do not really want to arrive on Wink and find no place to stay, as the portage between would be particularly nasty going from Wink to Poohbah. I see on the "other website" and have read comments here indicating that there is only one "decent" site on Wink.

Are there alternatives? I would be solo, and use a hammock, but am equipped to go to ground if necessary.

It looks like the intelligence reports you have read indicate one site experienced wind damage in 2015 but was otherwise listed as decent. It's likely been tidied up by now. The other site sounds divine. Going to ground sound unnecessary.

The portage from Wink to Poobah sounds like a challenge and it sounds like you've already reconnoitered it. But at least it's only medium length at best.

I say go for it!

Was there in 2016. The northern site is outstanding. At that time, the southern site was less than ideal because of the downed trees. I bet it's fine now. Wish I could remember if there were other sites. I have to believe there are but I don't specifically remember any. We liked Wink better than Poohbah believe it or not. We thought it was more beautiful than Poohbah and there was no one else there. The fishing was excellent- we caught good smallies, largies, pike, and walleye. It has lakers too but we didn't try for them. I'd love to get back to Wink someday.
