I came across this while browsing Amazon Prime deals. Has anyone tried the Waterdrop gravity filters. At just $30, it seems almost to good to be true.

My group’s go-to filter in the Quetico. The filters are inexpensive and last a long time if maintained. Typical life expectancy of filter: one season of five weeks for four guys and multiple long weekend trips with my wife. Quality bag, the tube is a bit rigid but can be replaced. Great unit, good as any expensive system in my mind. Name recognized company too. Not a cheap knock off.

From what I can find, Waterdrop seems to be a Chinese company masquerading as Californian. That raises some red flags with me. I would look very carefully at any other claims that they make.

Tried and tested true for my gang processing multiple hundreds of gallons. Everyone gets to choose.

All of their certification and testing documents exclude the gravity straw system. They also avoid listing specific reduction claims on the website. They list the filter pore size as 0.1 microns, but only list a 4 log reduction (99.99%) in "contaminants". Then there's the chinglish ad copy and known fact that they are a Chinese company pretending to be States-based.

It's a value proposition, and in the BWCAW it's probably just fine. However, not much more money gets you into similar systems from more reputable companies. A Sawyer Squeeze is $35 and new camelbak bladders are $5-10 at major military surplus retailers. Heck, I just bought 5 new MSR in-line filters from a surplus store for $6 each.

I bought the blue roll-top dirty bag in this system a couple of years ago. I really like it, best dirty bag I've ever used. I frequently use it for ballast, even when I don't need to filter any water. I use it with Sawyer filters (2 packs are cheap) and have not had any problems connecting it to fittings from an older Platypus set.

I know nothing about the manufacturer. Hopefully it doesn't give me cancer.

It's probably just fine, but I can say not using any filter and just dipping directly from the lake is tried and try tested too :) Did that for 3 trips/year, for 15 years never sick once.

LOL. While super easy nowadays with gravity filter setups, I still occasionally dip mid lake for water if Im thirsty or know a long portage is coming up.
