Hello Just got back from a September 15-23 trip to Saganagons where for the first time we based camped on Saganagons. Our original plan was to go to Kawnipi, but, because of the age of our group ranging from 77 to 69, we decided to base camp on Saganagons. Glad we did. The weather was good, but perhaps a bit too warm, the campsite was nice and the fishing was better than expected and there were very few bugs. After more than a dozen trips to the Quetico since 1968, this was the most relaxing and enjoyable. The Silver Falls portage was no picnic but we made it without incident.
This was the latest I have been to the Quetico and I have to admit that I will definitely consider a similar trip in mid-to-late September.
I always base camp in Saganagons. The fishing is incredible. Saganagons is usually a pass-through lake on the way to Kawnipi, kind-of like Arkansas is a fly-over state. (I live in Arkansas and it's an incredible place to live.)
I've stayed on Saganagons from the middle of June to late August. Fishing methods and depths differ depending on the time of year, but the fishing is always first-rate. It's the best-kept secret in Quetico, but don't tell anyone because it's the best-kept secret.
