I put this on the fishing forum, but figured I would also post here since it relates to trip planning more than anything. thanks for any advice.
Most of the best entry points are long gone in terms of permits. But, the first week in May has availability. Anyone have any good ideas or experience on an early trip. Also depends on ice out. But, it looks like Early May should be a possible. I know everyone is primarily looking for Walleyes and Smallies. But I wouldn't mind Crappies and Sunnies if it gets me into the BW.
Also, this may be my first post. But, I'm always reading and getting info on this site. Thanks to those that share their wisdom.

Welcome to bwca.com!

I don't know what the permit availability situation is...but, I'd suggest trying g to get to Bald Eagle/Gabbro area. I'm sure the Gabbro permits are long gone but, you might try the Snake or Little Isabella EP's to get there too. I know that area harbors some nice chappies & pan fish as well as walkeyes, northern & smallies.

Never been there - but Malberg is rumored to have some really nice Bluegills

Check the thickness of the ice before you leave the portage.

This year the lakes may all be open water the first week of May but they are not always. I have seen breakup happen on May 15th.
