Oh yes, done day trips out of there while on vacation in Thunder Bay. It’s a bit like Isle Royal at times, clear water, rocky, lots of boreal forest. There are trails out there going through big cedars

I know they have lot of groomed cross country trails for skiing, but at my age I still love to ski, but on a flats surface.

It does look Beautiful. Only seen it many times from the Greenstone and Minong Ridge trails on Isle Royale.

We have day hiked there before starting trips. Nice trails, lake views and few people during the week.

Other than BWCA, Quetico,WCPP canoeing, we also do “car camping.
Sleeping Giant PP has been our go-to over the years with many trips out there.
There are remote backpacking camp spots as well as an entire campground. Many of the campground sites are relatively private. The campground sits on Marie Louise Lake… not on Lake Superior. A canoe or kayak can be used easily on this lake. There are also a few
“Primitive” camp spots on the opposite side of the campground. These have no water source but to bring a vessel to collect it and bring back to camp. The sites are much more private and less-used.
Lots of hiking on the Sibley Peninsula. We also bring bikes.
It’s definitely not wilderness camping but can be lots of fun… especially on the shoulder seasons. It’s a great place to bring those friends who might not be as inclined to do the canoe trip but still want to get out.

Thanks, what is lake Louise size and what about canoeing along the shores in lake superior, all too big of water. It looks so beautiful.

Pinetree, on a windless day, dropping a canoe in the water is always a possibility. It doesn’t take much wind on that lake to make it uncomfortable. Marie Louise Lake is good sized. There are maps on the Ontario Parks website.

Paddling would be the same as anywhere on Lake Superior I guess, wait for a calm day and be very cautious.

For a general visit or hiking, it's great! If you can, get up to some of the high overlooks, they are amazing.

Canada is the best!

It's a gorgeous park with some incredible overlooks, trails, and shoreline hikes. If you decide to camp at Marie Louise Lake Campground , watch out for habituated stink badgers of the night!

My wife and I camped there 10 years back. We had three skunks come waddling up as we were sitting by the fire, about 3' from my shoes. When I jumped up, I scared the hell out of my wife who assumed I was reacting to a bear. I managed to coax them out of our camp but they came back in about 30 minutes. We moved camp to another section of the campground around 1am.

the sleeping giant area is very nice. the campground and lake are not my cup of tea but we did stay in a cabin with my grand daughter for a long weekend a couple of years ago. there is a large beach area. nice for kids. nothing special imho.
i live in the area.
nothing impressive about the lake.
the hiking is top notch. you can even hike to the top of the giant. best to rent a bike to get to the base of the giant unless you are a very seasoned hiker.
there is a cool lookout spot (i am not good with heights) you can drive to that projects out from the cliffs. yikes. great views on a good day though.
silver islet is close by. nice general store owned by a friend of mine. pls stop by. and a nice beach area.
i would not canoe on lake superior but some do. take obvious precautions. that lake is unforgiving. even in summer the waters can be deadly.
most people would prefer to use a kayak.
pls remember it is a prov park so permits are needed if you plan to park within the boundaries.

"lost lakes" is a great channel. one of my favorites. they live in this area now. you can also check out a youtube channel called "camping with the coles". they visit tons of provincial parks and do excellent reviews. they have done one on sleeping giant.

We didn't spend much time here as it was more of a scouting mission for future trips down the Canadian side of superior. But the park looks like a great spot to stay at. Would have liked to hike the giant trail but didn't want to commit 8 hrs on this visit.

Very few visitors and open sites, seemed to be a theme based on that and stopping at the quetico park west of atikokan on the way to Thunder bay and questions about reservations resulted in them asking if we wanted one that night.

Followed up on a tip from staff at sleeping giant and checked out Ouimet canyon pp. Very worth it! Amazing view and the private longest suspension bridge is breath taking.

This guy should make a trip into Inspiration Lake Armstrong Station if you like Diabase Sills Inspiration Diabase Sill part of the Nipigon Diabase Sill Complex is a good example of Mid Continent Rift. Especially Spangle Lake with over 300 ft cliffs and 300ft depth in places. I used to access from Waweig, Curve, Spangle to Inspiration and back in the 1980s but you could go from Mackenzie and Machine Gun Lakes to the west or from Keyhole and No Name to the North. Alan Cheeseman or Don Elliot can probably help out anybody wanting more up to date info...

the local fire / rescue dept just had to go in and assist two groups out of the parks trail system. one couple and a group of 5. sounds like they got disoriented near dark. had no lights. no food. and no extra water etc. sometimes people get too comfortable on a well established trail system and forget the basics. things can change for the worse very quickly around this area.

I just asked the park this question and they told me- there are 65 lakes and 42 species of fish!
That is a huge pleasant surprise to me.

I see one of my relations Hope Park Warden in the slide show.. When you are in the area you can also book a free tour of the Dorion Fish Hatchery.. 800 Fish Hatchery Road Dorion, Ontario P0T1K0 (807-857-2322) They stock cold water species Lake,Brook,Splake,Rainbow and Brown Trout.. You can find lots nearby on the MNR Fish on line website.. On the way there you will pass Pass Lake / Stocking- Lake Trout & Splake Trout, Caribou Lake Stocking Brook Trout and D'Archy Lake Stocking Brown & Rainbow Trout. The last one is quite a ways in turn right on the Caribou Lake Road and use a canoe carrier 1.6 miles from the gravel pit to D'Archy down the trapline trail to the lake. Regards; Patrick

Thanks for the info-is lake Superior protected enough maybe you could ice fish for lake trout? How about the many lakes in the park.
Its on my bucket list.
I see they have cabins and other heated facilities for winter also.

lots of people ice fish on the big lake but you may need someone with local knowledge to point you in the right direction.
we have stayed in one of the cabins in summer. they are nice. full kitchen and bathrooms. a bit of a pain humping your gear to them though unless you are in the closest one to the parking area. i think there are two closest to the water. they seem to feel a bit more private.
my only complaint when we were there was each cabin not having its own bbq. there was only one that we were told they share. and it was in rough shape.
this may have changed. not sure.
