My wife and I just took our 5 year old on her 1st overnight trip to the BWCA and she can't wait to go back again. WOO HOO!!!!!!!!!! We entered Hog Creek #36 and camped on Perent. Thank you much to Kanoes and the many others that have suggested that trip for kids. We entered on a Monday and saw a lot less people than we expected to. Only 5 cars in the parking lot, only 3 of the 10 campsites we checked were occupied, and had a 24 hour stretch of not seeing another person.
She caught several walleye in the canoe and spent endless amounts of time fishing from shore, swimming, playing with the leeches, and playing around the campsite. She even put her own leeches on the hook.
She told me that she wished we would have spent 1 more night at the campsite instead of staying at the hotel. (we stayed at the AmericInn in Tofte the night before we entered) I think that's a pretty good sign.
When we were leaving the parking lot at the e.p. we saw a wolf in the road that goes to Kawishiwi Lake. Perfect ending to an amazing trip.
I would also like to thank Kiporby and all of the other parents on here that trip with their young kids for inspiring me to take my daughter on a trip at a much earlier age than I ever thought I would have.
Pictures are worth a thousand words.

I love the picture of her with her G loomis Barbie fishing rod and that walleye, Priceless .

Ducks - those pictures are worth a million words! I wish I had introduced my boys to the BWCA before they moved on with their lives....now I have to hope for grandchildren. It will be hard though- my son and daughter-in-law are both Lt. in the Air Force - haven't even been home for a long time and are so busy with their training that kids aren't on their radar screen yet. You are so lucky to make those memories now. I might have to be a little ol' gray hair Granny paddling the grandkids around!

quote BWPaddler: "Did I make out a stuffed loon in the boat? How cool is that - does it make noise like a loon and if so, did you get any answers?"
Yes, yes, and yes :)
She picked it out at the Ranger Station when we were getting the permit. She kept it close to her at all times and turned my hat into a nest for it.
Thanks for the many kind words everyone.

I think my eldest has one just like it - a souvenir from her pre-kindergarten "solo" trip without siblings. Love that thing, but never tried to play it for the real loons. Love the hat as a nest!!

I look forward to reading her posts in the future, you have created a paddler! She will be in the woods when she grows up and will take her kids and grandparents (you)! Fantastic!!!!!
OMG "Corndogged again!" My all time favorite quote.

Way to go Ducks!! You have officially passed on your love of the wilderness to your daughter. You could never have given her a more valuable gift! You should be proud!!

Duck, I'm following this post because I'm thinking of doing Hog Creek with our 5 year old for her first trip. my questions is this.....What is the current like going back up Hog Creek on your way back to the entry point?
Just curious as I begin to formulate this trip.
Thanks!

I am not Ducks, but I have been to Perent Lake through the Hog Creek e.p. my 7 yo daughter (at the time) and I went in August and the current was barely noticeable. You may have 2 or 3 beaver dams to pull over. If water is high enough you can get a running start and get over some without getting out of canoe by rocking canoe (provided you are paddling an aluminum canoe. My daughter had never paddled before and it was a good trip for her to learn on the creek.

Wow! What a blast from the past. Great memories! Yep, big duckling turns 15 soon and will be doing her 6th daddy/daughter trip with me this year. I alternate each year with her younger sister which one goes on a daddy/daughter trip. It's always my favorite few days of the year. You will love every minute of it. We now have the wonderful surprise blessing of a little boy who is 14 months and I can't wait to get him started. I'm hoping to do his 1st father/son trip this summer, but just to an EP campground like Sawbill.
Sandman answered the Hog Creek question for you well. The current is so unnoticeable that when you come to a false turn you need to pay close attention to which way the weeds are moving to know which way is the correct way to go.
Have a great trip! Fire away with any other questions that you may have about Perent or the Hog Creek. Eater size walleye are usually eager to bite and there are a good number of nice island campsites.
