Possibly going to Shell lake. Anyone been there recently or within the last few years. We are planning to do loads of fishing. Anyone know any good spots or any advice on what is a good campsite to get. Thanks.

If you haven't done so already? Check out the map. Just click on the baloons.

We honeymooned on the north side of Con Island two years ago in September. Didn't fish much:) Saw a two canoe group trolling the shore by the portage to Heritage pull a few fish out. Great camp site, after we cleaned up the last party's mess. Fairly shallow lake.

I've camped on the southern site on Con Island. Nice site. HUGE. A circus could set up there.

We were there over the 4th. The portage from Lower Pauness has a bridge that is missing the lower support members. So step very careful. We tried to fish but it was a little to windy for us.

I stayed on the east facing campsite (or middle campsite) on Shell in May. Great landing and kitchen area. only one really level tent pad though. and beware of nocturnal beavers that apparently have no fear of humans. many, many trees down just behind camp and every dusk he came to visit.

North site looked fabulous but we never found a decent landing, maybe others know of one.

We camped on Little Shell and fished Shell and Lynx last week, and talked a couple times with the guys at that particular site. They had a lot of stuff, maybe not quite a circus, but certainly approaching it. They said they caught quite a few walleyes off their site the first day or so until the t-storms starting rolling through, and then things quieted down for a while. Of course, I can't verify that they weren't full of it either.

See my picture above with the canoe in the water. I'm assuming that's the same campsite you're talking about, though I was there a long time ago. I don't remember the landing being a problem and I certainly did not get my feet wet (my husband is good at getting me right where I can get out with dry feet, and that was back in the day before I had Muck boots).

It was a fabulous site, but it was my first trip and I didn't know just how fabulous.

As far as campsites go, I'll give you my thoughts from memory. My last trip was two years ago there, but doubt much has changed.

My top choice would be the North in of Con Island. Big site, neat trails, access to some great shore fishing. Also, the areas I like to fish are quickly accessed from this site.

I would also say that the South end of Con Island is a great site, stayed here on a trip with my oldest daughter with her cedar canoe that she had just completed. Fishing from shore was ok.

I too have used the Middle site, did not like it. Just my opinion.

Finally, we stayed at the campsite in the SouthEast Corner of the lake, a little waterfall/stream comes in from maybe loon lake? (would have to look at a map) We caught walleye from this campsite as well.

There can be some tremendous fishing in the lakes near shell as well.
