Looking at the Magic auction. Wanted to know if I can fit a #3 pack, 30L barrel, 140lb me, and 75lb dog in the Magic. I hope so. Oh, pack and barrel 60lb.
Thanks

Bell lists the "optimum loading" as 160-280 lbs, with a maximum capacity of what looks like 650 lbs, so 335 is a little over the optimum handling level, but should fit fine. You'll sink it by four inches compared to empty floating if I'm reading this right.

how wide is a #3?

you certainly wont be able to lay that pack down so its below the guns. i would say a 20" wide pack is about max.

I have the Kondos Guide pack too. I couldn't get enough into it and the 30L barrel, so I had to go to the #3 pack. I just looked at the explorer. If I get the Magic looks like I'll be getting a new pack in the future. Thanks for the help Kanoes!

Watch it. The Magic is swedeform. Swedeform hulls are trim sensitive. I have done as you are doing.

I won't do it again. The dog would not lie down in the bow but more important the bow was not light enough and steering was difficult. I had a 20 mile an hour crosswind and the boat wallowed badly in two foot waves. Normally I can swing the boat around if the boat is light enough in the bow and I can wind ferry.

For your own safety get a bigger boat. The pack is the least of your troubles.

YellowCanoe, what canoe do you recommend? I've used and liked the Encounter.

if you can live without the dog a magic is a fantastic tripping canoe.

Maybe I should just get two one with dog and Magic for no dog trip. Any problem with having multiple canoes?

I dont know what is available to you! I dont know much about Wenonah Solos.

Best to test what is available to you with the load that you intend to trip with. On a nasty windy day if possible.

I have very good luck with my Curtis Nomad but how often do you see those?

Also let your dog decide whats comfortable. Mine loves the Swift Raven for tripping as it gives her the room she demands. Its a huge boat for me for portaging and would be last in a race with Wenonahs.

chesapeaks, only my wife thinks one canoe is enough. I have a CCS Explorer in front and a GG Superior 1 in back of me, but have to be carefull packing the Superior 1 so it fits nice.

I test paddled a Magic today. Had to lay the #3 pack on it's side in back 30L barrel in front dog between the legs. Not much room left. Felt a little cramped and unstable.

Who was cramped? If your dog was nestling against you that was good!

Remember according to me anyway your dog rules.. If your dog was comfy and you felt unstable..keep paddling and try to get used to it. You will adapt with time. Dogs however tell you right away if they feel off or uncomfortable. And they don't ever change their mind.

But if your inner gut says "bad idea"..trust it. You have to paddle your own trip and not our opinion of what your trip should be.

One thing to consider, When I first paddled my Magic it always felt "twitchy". After more experience I don't even notice it anymore.

Yup. RockStar is Ravenesque. A Magic is comparatively anorexic.

BTW I have seen exactly ONE RockStar. Are you keeping them all in the Midwest?

09/05/2011 09:58PM
i will have my magic packed, on the water, for a hunter island solo. thursday. :)
