Not alot of info out there on the subject, but thought id see if anybody had any input be it good lakes, or any experience first or second hand that they could share? Any close lakes that could be easily speared like say Isabella for example that hold decent swede populations?

I used to run sled dogs in the BWCA. I would haul a group of guys up to Hoist Bay on Basswood for spearing. I would haul their gear and one group member to the spot they wanted to set up. They would take all portable ice houses. The rest of the guys would ski across fall lake and 4 mile portage and then join up with the gear on hoist. They always had great luck and saw a ton of fish.

I would give one of the mushers in the Ely area a call if you wanted to do something like that.

I haven't speared up there but have ice fished Wind Bay on Basswood with great success for the pike. It is relatively shallow if I recall correctly and I have always thought it would be a good spearing area.

Ive gone once, we skied across gunflint and over to northlake. the little lakes in between were great for northern spearing.

Most of the spearing I've done was on a river. Never in the BW though. We set the house on an inside curve, just on the edge of the toe or deepest part of the river. Seemed to always work. River spearing is interesting because there is always movement in the water. Cool stuff floats through. Good luck and be careful!

Heard of a couple of guys did a overnight trip to Basswood thru a dogsledder guide. Seen a lot of northerns. No real big ones. Had a good time.
