Has anyone ever encountered a porcupine in the BW? How about skunks?

Here is the greatest skunk smell remover ever:

I got this recipe from the WI Trappers Association

Mix all ingredients together in an open bucket.
1 quart hydrogen peroxide
1 cup baking soda
1 teaspoon liquid dish soap

Use a sponge or cloth to wipe animal. Just like you are giving them a bath with shampoo. Keep out of eyes.

Use the entire batch and use it immediately after you mix it up. I am told it loses its effectiveness after a short time.

Thankfully my dog has never had a run in with either one. I'll have to remember that mix though just in case.

This does remind me on my one and only run in with a porcupine though. It was last november during deer hunting. I was sitting in my portable tree stand late one afternoon when i see a porcupine walking along. I figured he was just passing through but he took a liking to my tree and started climbing up. Luckily i was able to toss a few twigs at him and get him to pick a different tree before he got up to where I was sitting. I just kept thinking that of all the trees in these woods why do you have to pick my tree to climb.

That's funny, nofish. It could have been worse. It could have been a bear!

Porcupines are the number one reason you want to bring a pair of needle-nosed pliers along, if you have a dog with you.

I'll have a needle nose with me for fishing anyway. I really hope I don't have to use it for that!

That is the same recipe I have for removing calcium build up in our shower!

I have been told to cut the end off of the porcupine quill and wait a while before you pull it out. Something about it relieving the pressure/swelling of the quill and making it easier to pull out. Anyone else heard this?

That's an old wives tale. You want to get those quills out ASAP, as they tend to work their way into the animal. These can be fatal if they work their way into the brain.

The two times my dog got into a porcupine here at my house her mouth was so full of quills that she could not close it. Also, there were a bunch of quills in the back of her mouth.

I spent 45 minutes sitting on my dog while she was on her back, pulling quills. It was a blood bath and painful for the dog, but you have no choice but to do it right away.

So, Wetlander, does it work well on calcium buildup, too? It works wonders as a skunk smell remover. The first application won't completely remove it, but will reduce the smell incredibly. You will probably want to repeat the washing once or twice. My sister's dog got sprayed pretty badly last summer. He is a light colored yellow lab. His entire chest and face were very yellow from the spray. You couldn't tolerate being near him afterward. After a good washing with the mix, you had to bend down to him to smell it.

Works like a charm.
