Glad you had such a great trip. Always better with a son.

Very nice report and excellent pictures. Do you use a high end camera? I had a bad experience with my spot last trip and will likely rent a sat phone next time. Didn't know radio shack could hook me up.

Great report! Thanks for sharing.

I just read your first trip report also. You two deserved and earned the perfect trip. Weather is only one reason why this trip went so well, you two have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge through experience.

You should take a newbie up sometime. You have a lot you can teach AND it's also fun to see things through a newbies eyes (plus you'll see how much you two have really learned through your experiences together). Well done!

Great job!

Thanks for the nice comments.

Gunflinter - I used a Kodak Easyshare Z740 (with 10x optical zoom) for most of the pictures - not really a high end camera. My son also took some pictures with his 35mm Rebel camera, which is more high end. Fortunately the 35mm camera fit perfectly in the orange waterproof protective sat phone case, which was convenient. He did a great job on the night sky pictures - he was up most of the night experimenting with different settings and taking many shots of different exposures.

We rented the sat phone (Iridium) from Buck's Radioshack in Grand Marais. It worked very well, and is a requirement of my wife for these remote trips. It is not cheap - $125 for a weekly rental and $2 per minute extra - but the piece of mind is worth it for my wife. You can also rent them on-line but I was more comfortable with the personal route. By the way, I am not at all a fan of RadioShack for most things, but the guys there really treated me well.

George - great idea. Until reading your comments, I still thought of ourselves as newbies, but I guess we are moving out of that stage. I would love to take along some of my son's friends to try to inject more youth into the demographics up there.
