Your photos looked very familiar to some I have from a recent trip through there. It's quickly becomes apparent why it's called the "Granite" river. It's really a fun area & it sounds like you had plenty. Thanks for taking the time to share your story & photos. Well done.

BH, thanks for a great report of a great trip. It would have been a bonus if you had shared some about hanging (I'm just getting into hammock camping, so my interest is peaked).

I appreciate the feedback, and hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing and reminising on the countless memories. Mort I would recomend posting in the general discusion to get some input on hanging your hammock. Buying hammocks for our trip was one of the best decisions we made before this trip. My friend Sean had some great tricks he learned hanging his hammock before I bought mine last summer. He said he watched alot of videos on youtube about hanging hammocks and tieing knots. Best tips i can give you without making a video and demonstrating them is to buy straps for hanging your hammock, it protects the trees and saves time(less knots). Buy 4 heavy duty steel rings, about 2" in diameter and two heavy duty carabiners. Put the two rings in the carabiner and clip the carabiner to the two ends of the strap that is around the tree. Then, take your main rope that runs thru your hammock and loop once around the steel rings putting the rope thru from the bottom of the rings(if feed the rope down, the rings wont bind on the rope properly and when you get in your hammock the ropes will slide thru the rings, rather than bind), then loop the rope around just one ring and tie the end of the rope back to the main line with a quick release style knot. Repeat the same on the otherside and you can tighten your hammock very tight using this method that requires zero knots. It took a little practice, but after a week in the BW we had mastered hanging our hammocks. I have a hennesey expedition asym and I am extremely pleased with it, I sleep better in the hammock than I do in my own bed. When it warms up, maybe sean and I will post a tutorial on how we hang our hammocks when we go camping this spring. I will make sure to post on here when we do.

The day you left (19th) up the Granite is the day I rolled into Gunflint Lodge to prepare for my last trip of the year. See trip report: 40 days in the BW. The couple I met went up the Granite the next day and we met back at the lodge the next Sunday. Then I headed up the granite myself. Loved that area a lot. Congrats on the big northern, sounded like a beauty and you got er back in the water right away... good job! Nice report and look forward to reading more from you in the years to come.

BH, thanks for the hammock talk. Just to let you know, I've joined hammocksforums.co, spent a lot of time gleaning articles and videos, ordered polyester tree straps, and even made my own toggles and whoopie slings! Yesterday I took the big plunge and ordered a new warbonnet black bird single in 1.7 to replace my old Cabella hammock. I'm really looking forward to using it on my early July solo this coming summer. Hopefully I can write up a trip report on the experience.
