kanoes, spent a couple hours today enjoying the perfect weather on Jake's patio...with a couple Hop Dish by Liftbridge Brewery out of Stillwater. I think you would really enjoy it...heavy on the hops and with the same notes of pine and citrus that Ranger has. Up there near the top for me.

was at the beer store tonight and I had my memory jolted.. Boulevard Single Wide IPA is one I tried a few weeks ago and I liked it. Need to get it again sometime. Have you had that one?

Just got home from the jar store where I found 22oz bottles of Stone 17th Anniversary Götterdämmerung IPA on sale for $2.69 each. Just bought one and will sample after it's chilled. 9.5% ABV. If I like it, I will go back and probably buy them out (looked like around a dozen bottles available).

mmmmmmm, this was very good. Interesting. Uses German hops which are less citrisy than American varieties, but still has the bite and bitterness. Almost a black pepper quality to it. I'll be going back tomorrow for more. Powerful stuff. And I don't ever worry about buying IPA's that are out of date- that's why IPA's were invented- hopped up to survive the long trip from England to India back in the day.

Quite a coincidenece, but yesterday I found Stone IPA at the grocery store and gave it a try. Very good at $8.65 a sixer.

My daughter was in California this week and I had her bring me back two bombers of Pliny the Elder. If you are not familiar, one of the best if not the best IPAs in America. Can't wait, but saving them for a special occasion.

"the best" is in the palate of the beholder. right now, i have to say i havent had anything ive liked more than steelhead. its a treat for me cause its over $10 a six. a little smokey, not as citrusy as ranger or torpedo. most expensive DOES NOT mean the best.

Don't wait too long. IPA's are best consumed while fresh. The hop aromas disipate quite quickly actually.

Every June I go to a cabin for a week with a couple buddies...we are all very into the craft beer scene so throughout the week we try a lot of different beers.

kanoes, you are right, price does not dictate quality. I recently tried the Ballast Point Sculpin which is expensive and wasn't that impressed. Ranger has been my long time favorite for locally available IPA's and I also share your taste for Torpedo. Pliny the Elder is more like Ranger but only more Rangerish...hope you have the chance to try it sometime. It is not all that expensive but has a very narrow distribution (west coast) so it is very hard to get a hold of. I have not tried "Steelhead"...who brews it and can you get it locally?

I've had Mojo IPA a couple of times now and like it. $8 or $9 for a six.

Lidylair... looks like a fun week!

Hands down my favorite beer is DogFish Head 90 min IPA. We don't get it distributed in MN, so anytime I get a chance to try some it is a special occasion.

On a side note, they used to sell DogFish in WI, but a guy in River Falls told me that they stopped distributing it there because they couldn't keep up with demand and DogFish didn't want to be known for that (whatever that means)...hard to believe, but of any state, WI is the most believable
