I love swinging one of those double bit cruiser axes. If they are older heads they can be quite valuable.

quote Mocha: "when you say 'low water level' do you mean NO water? is this the lake bed you're standing on? if so, that is really cool."
Yes I'm standing on the lake bed. Florence Lake was formed when they damned the San Joaquin River. The lake is around 7500 feet elevation. The water level goes down every year to around 8%. The water is used to generate electricity and irrigation. I'll post another picture to give you a better idea of what another lake looks like.

a back bay on LaCroix.
i must of passed this back back located in a back bay in one of the bigger side bays of LaCroix at least ten times since 1985
a book i have on the BW shows this bay on a map as the place the CCC cut the trees for the Ranger Station at Boulder Bay.
it's just a level trail thru the woods.

I'm loving the fall color photos and wish I had acted on my impulse to take a late season trip to get some pics of my own.
Was reminiscing about the trip I had in June and searched back through pictures. I was struck by the beauty of the fresh greenery and now am already wishing winter was behind us.
Near the bottom of Devil's Cascade we came across this...

quote wetcanoedog: "mooseplums..what are you using to take the panoramic photos??
nice stuff.."
on canoe trips I use a Nikon P510, it's lighter and takes up little room. It has a panorama feature, and 42x zoom lens. Most of my bird photos are taken with this.
I also use a Nikon D90...this is my "almost everything/everywhere else camera

I tried this one on Brule Bay as an experiment. I've always wanted to go to a photo store and have a favorite pic broken into thirds and then hang three pictures on the wall to form one view. Just wondered if any of you have done that and how you liked it. I kind of like how this makes me "think" through the two trees to form the whole scene. Note, shortly before taking this momma and baby moose swam across the bay from left to right. The camera was not ready, arrrgh.

Was this one and your profile picture just taken recently? Where I live we've had a ton of rain in the last week but no snow yet. It can wait."
the lake scene was December 2, 2012 and that profile photo was a few years ago in the winter. it's snowing here right now but no ice on the lake yet.

ham lake fire, May 2007. this was a back burn done across the lake to rid the back hillside of brush in case the fire moved this direction. the fire eventually did burn across the granite river and along the Canadian shoreline. this back burn saved the private cabins and cross river lodge.

quote wetcanoedog: "mooseplums..you have a very good eye..the snow blending into the trees and so on very nice.do you look around for shots like this.when i get a good one it's just a lucky moment."
I have my camera(s) with me everywhere I go....unless I forget, that's when the real good shots happen :)

quote Mocha: " sunset on the north brule river, nov 13, 2013.
this photo has not be retouched in anyway! I love the rich color of the sunset on the trees. too bad there is a powerline... but it's a perfect fall day with some ice forming on the river."
Very nice. You should have a "healing brush" or clone tool to easily remove the power line.

quote Mocha: "quote hobbydog: " Portage to Irregular Lake. It would have been a fun one if it wasn't so hot that day.
"
this would be beautiful in the winter on snowshoes! where is irregular lake?"
The SW part of WCPP. It was about 800 meters, mostly uphill and swampy on the first 100 meters but most of it was a walk in the park. At the time I didn't seem to enjoy it but I did take lots of pics and looking back at them it was a pretty nice portage. Here is another pic from the same portage.

wetcanoedog, it has recovered just fine...changed but recovered. You can see a lot of evidence of the flood , especially downed timber strewn about like matchsticks. But the fishing is still good; I didn't go this year but the previous two years in April and caught a bunch including a 15 inch Rainbow...beautiful fish.
whitewater State Park is nice but can be very busy. I prefer Carley State Park just up the road a piece. Much more remote and quiet but the campground is only open from Memorial weekend through labor Day for some reason. Just hiked there 2 weekends ago on a foggy misty November day. About those finnicky trout...I believe they can sense our anger...
By the way, the pickled eggs at Mauer Bros in Elba are tasty as ever too.
