Hi,

I'm looking for a 2nd tarp for my hammock - one that provides more coverage and can be used for colder weather.

I have two questions;
1) Do you have a recommended brand that has done well keeping you dry in heavy rain? (I've narrowed my possibilities down to WB Superfly, UGQ Winter Dream, and JRB 11x12) I prefer a 12' ridgeline, but I think 11 would be ok. I'd like a Maccat - look like good quality, but no response from Brian.
2) Has anyone experienced "tarp misting" with a Silnylon tarp? Should I be concerned about that with some of the lightweight tarps?

UGQ offers their Winter Dream in a PU coated 2.6oz nylon version which should be pretty bomb proof but will end up weighing a little more than 3 lbs and pack larger than I'd like.

- Brandon at WB uses "nevermist" Silnylon which is supposed to be good to 2000mm HH and he's had no complaints.
- Jack at JRB said his material is not pressure rated.
- Paul at UGQ said his silnylon is certified to 1000mm HH, then he has the option of a PU coated nylon which is heavy

Thanks for your help!

I have a Superfly and I really like the way that I can button it up when needed. I have been through some real downpours in it and after I learned about getting a drip line set, I have never gotten wet.

If you look close in this picture, it was in a torrential downpour with pea size hail.

I have both a Kelty Noah's tarp and a cheap $20 Guide Gear tarp. Both have been through some very serious weather and heavy torrential rains.

I've never experienced "tarp misting."

I have experienced condensation collecting under the tarp. It happens every time colder night air flows over the slightly warmer air (caused by your body heat) under the tarp. An awful lot of people confuse this condensation as a leaking tarp.

Hi,

Thanks very much for the replies.

Yes, I have had the condensation issue occur a couple of times not to be confused with tarp misting which is a term used to describe water being forced through the micro openings in the tarp fabric during heavy rain.

Thanks again!

War bonnet with doors. Works very well.

Good to hear - ordered one right after I posted, just received email from Brandon that my Superfly has shipped - can't wait to set up and try it out!

My five year old Noah's Tarp 12' kept me dry despite nearby tornados, gale force winds and 3 inches of rain in 60 minutes on Friday night.

I've been looking at Hennessy's Monsoon and Typhoon. Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but they sure look storm proof.

The Guide Gear is PU coated and I believe the Kelty Noah is also PU coated. The PU coating is waterproof and quite a bit heavier than silnylon. Both of those tarps are great to have in a serious storm.

Looking for a lighter option it is hard to argue against the Warbonnet product. The Superfly gets just about universal approval for all its attributes, weight, rain resistance, wind resistance, full coverage, and durability.

One more thing...if you have some samolians to spend take a look at Hammock Gear or zPacks cuben tarp. Big, water proof, no stretch, and as light as it gets. Mountain Laurel Designs and hyerlight Mountain gear also sell cubens, but I think they don't have doors.

Is there a sealing spray that you would recommend if you do get a tarp that is "misting". Weight is no issue on our trips.

I have used several coats of scotchguard in the past. It lasts for at least one 7-10 day trip.
But is weight is no issue, buy the less expensive Kelty tarp or other PU coated product. Then you'll have extra $$ to spend on something alse, like a nice UQ or TQ.

I have the Superfly and would not trade it for anything. I really love this blue color too. It was one of Brandons first models and still had the removeable doors with snaps (which I really like). I'm pretty sure if you asked, he could do one up in this color.

Another vote for the WBB Superfly. No leaking (tarp misting).
