What is the Voyager Route all about that I’ve seen a few people mention ? Has anyone done it ? I am trying to come up with a mid life Crises(that’s what my wife calls it anyway- I just call it fun)Trip for late summer for a second trip. I have only found a few mentions of the route . I know BeaV did it a few years back but that is the only mention of it I could find. Is that a trip you could do unsupported ? I’ve taken 20 or so trips now and after my 10 day Fishing heavy Solo in June I’d like to do a more Challenging trip in Aug or Sept.. I’d be open to other suggestions as well . I’ve thought about Ely to Grand Marais or Vice Versa as well …. I thought Id post here instead of the trip forum since you guys all seem pretty up on this type of stuff- Thanks

I think most people mean the border route including the Grand Portage to Lake Superior. Not sure if starting at Crane or International Falls is the "true" route but I've been looking at beginning at Lake of the Woods.

I haven't had much success on finding camping on teh Rainy River between LOW and International Falls, so if you spot something, please post. After that, seems like lots of choices. I also have considered going in on CA side and using a crown land permit to LLC. Will be a few years before I can block the three to four weeks I figure on, so haven't hunted to seriously yet.

My first trip ever (43 years ago) was from Ely to Lake Superior. We did it in 9 days with one layover day.

The visitor/ranger's center south of Big Fork(Chippewa Nat. Forest) had a map they gave me with canoe routes. It was mostly for river-running. I seem to remember some camps sites at the Big Fork River or near Grand Mounds State Park. Could be wrong though. I'm going to pull out my old maps to verify.

The Big Fork river is a state water trail so they have a nice map showing all the accesses and campsites with everything marked by river mile. About 165 miles, if I remember correctly, from Dora Lake to the Rainy River. I did the whole thing a few years back. Very nice river. I didn't see a soul on the river the entire trip, though that was mostly because I did it at the spur of the moment one mid-April with no spring flooding and temps in the 60's and 70's.

The Little Fork river is nearby too and I hope to do it as well someday.

Search for Minnesota state water trails and you'll find all sorts of neat rivers to run with great maps and info.

I see now that you meant camp sites along the Rainy river near where the Big Fork dumps in. I don't remember any camp sites there but there was a boat access right at the junction, just slightly up the Big Fork.

That's funny kanoes. I just did a half hour of research on that exact idea. Looks like just what I'm looking for. It kinda makes the east to west BWCA trip idea look kinda soft doesn't it. .

Not the right choice of words I guess. I was looking at more of the type of portages on the hunters loop i guess. 60 days yesterday of not smoking after a 10 yr pack a day awful stinky habit is actually why I am considering challenging myself this summer and want to try out my new health. I've been using a vaporizer to help with the headaches I was getting from the nicotine withdrawals but still feel so much better and want to think of something to celebrate.

congrats on 60! hunter portages are not bad at all. portages are just time anyway.
