If you could ski classic for one day in the Ely area, where would you go? We did the Hidden Valley area a couple of years ago and it was okay but not great.

North Arm Trails near the end of the North Arm Road (opposite Camp Du Nord). I've been skiing them day in and out (50-100 times a year) for 25 years and still get excited when I head out. They require a decent amount of snow (probably about 18") and some degree of competence. When there is enough snow Du Nord grooms some of the trails that are outside the BWCA- but most are "hand tracked"- ups and down, corners, tight trees, open rock ridges and lakes and swamps to traverse.

You either have pretty high standards or the snow conditions were pretty miserable when you visited Hidden Valley. We tried it out during Winter Fest last February and wished we had more time to spend. The trails were great.

I like the Burntside ski trails also.
But to me if the snow is not too deep, give me a good day in the BWCA on skiis going across lakes and swamps etc.. That is the best.

I like to ski the lakes and swamps as well but prefer to wait until the snow is set into a firm crust and then skate to my hearts content. What the North Arm Trails have that I love is challenging hills and turns- as well as the leisurely crossing of lakes and swamps.
